Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

hnterminal

Hacker News in your terminal.

hnterminal prints the current Hacker News front page to your terminal in a dense, aligned, ruled layout. This is the minimal early release (v0.0.1) of the HNTerminal project — a high-information-density HN reader that renders public HN data and layers on computed signals (velocity, heat, controversy) the HN API does not provide.

This seed renders only. The intelligence layer lives on the backend and lands in later releases.

Install

npm install -g hnterminal

Requires Node 18+ (uses the global fetch).

Usage

hnterminal              # top 30 stories
hnterminal new -n 10    # newest 10
hnterminal show          # Show HN
hnterminal best --limit 50

Sections: top (default), new, best, ask, show, job.

USAGE
  hnterminal [section] [options]

OPTIONS
  -n, --limit <n>   number of stories (1-100, default 30)
  -h, --help        show this help
  -v, --version     print version

Data source

Public Hacker News data via the Firebase HN API (hacker-news.firebaseio.com/v0). This package only reads public data.

Status

Early and experimental. The full HNTerminal product (ruled-grid layouts, switchable readers, backend intelligence layer) is under active development. Expect breaking changes before v1.0.
