Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

homebridge-neo-pixel-platform

A plugin for Homebridge to be able to define and control multiple lights on a single NeoPixel strand of LED's

This plugin uses the rpi-ws281x-native plugin that requires HW access and with that access privileges as it uses the rpi_ws281x library in its turn. The standard way of connecting is assumed. No options are forwarded to the plugin.

Please refer to the rpi_ws281x page for hardware instructions.

Install

Standard install through npm when published on NPM... Note the sudo and the -g additions to standard npm install.

$ sudo npm install -g homebridge-neo-pixel-platform

Homebridge itself should run with priviliged access. I use homebridge in systemd running as root which was the easiest way but not per se the best solution.

Configure

Configuration is relatively straightforward. Below is a json platform snippet to add to your Homebridge configuration. Adding lights is done through a websevice.

"platforms": [{
    "platform": "NeoPixels.MultiLightPlatform",
    "servicePort": 6615,
    "name": "NeoPixels",
    "nrOfLeds": 14,
    "showRainbowAnimationWhenStarted": true
}]

The servicePort parameter is there to select a free port on your system. The webservice won't win a beauty contest but it works.

The showRainbowAnimationWhenStarted parameter hides or shows a rainbow animation after launching to indicate launch has finished.

Add lights

Following commands add three lights, one using all (14) LED's, one at the beginning and one at the end of the string:

curl -H "Content-Type: application/json" -X POST -d '{"name":"All","startIdx":"0","endIdx":"14"}' http://<homebridgeIp>:<servicePort>/add
curl -H "Content-Type: application/json" -X POST -d '{"name":"Start LEDs","startIdx":"0","endIdx":"4"}' http://<homebridgeIp>:<servicePort>/add
curl -H "Content-Type: application/json" -X POST -d '{"name":"End LEDs","startIdx":"11","endIdx":"14"}' http://<homebridgeIp>:<servicePort>/add

Remove lights

Removing them is similar:

curl http://<homebridgeIp>:<servicePort>/remove?All
curl http://<homebridgeIp>:<servicePort>/remove?Start%20LEDs
curl http://<homebridgeIp>:<servicePort>/remove?End%20LEDs
