Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

http202-retry

A module to automatically retry HTTP requests if a HTTP 202 response is returned.

I built this module specifically for interacting with GeoJSON APIs on ArcGIS Open Data websites, but it may be useful for other purposes.

The GeoJSON API on ArcGIS Open Data websites returns a 202 Accepted response code when a filter is applied to a dataset. This means the server is still processing the request. This module catches that response code and automatically schedules another request after a short duration. By default the process repeats for 30s or until data is returned.

Usage

var reqRetry = require('http202-retry')

reqRetry('http://data.sjcgis.org/datasets/167317f36825482abeae53637ad7a7f4_3.geojson?where=Island%20like%20\'%25Decatur%25\'', {
  reqOpts: {
    json: true
  }
}, function (err, res, body) {
  if (err) throw err
  if (res.statusCode === 200) {
    console.log('GeoJSON data: ', body)
  } else {
    console.log('Response returned: ', res.statusCode)
  }
})

API

var reqRetry = require('http202-retry')

reqRetry([url], [opts], cb)

By default, creates a new request (xhr in browsers). Automatically retries the request several times (up to 30s by default) if response.statusCode === 202.

  • [opts.request] {Function} if specified, a substitute XMLHttpRequest GET function. See this example. If not specified, nets is used.

  • [opts.reqOpts] {Object} options passed to requestOptions parameter (xhrOptions in the browser). Include json:true if requesting JSON or GeoJSON data.

  • [opts.timeout] {Number} Time, in milliseconds, to wait until timeout (default 30000)

  • cb {Function} is called with the arguments (Error, response, body)

Error is only returned if something is preventing the request or after time out. HTTP 400 or 500 responses will not return an error. You should catch these yourself.

Installation

npm install http202-retry
