Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Dead-simple CLI notepad — type, slash-command, save. No AI, no modes, just notes.

notes is a terminal notepad with a minimalist TUI: an editor buffer, / slash commands with arrow-key selection, and zero configuration. Notes are plain .txt files in ~/notes/.

Install

# npm (recommended)
npm i -g hyprnotes

# Homebrew
brew install cnvction/hyprnotes/hyprnotes

# curl (any platform)
curl -sL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/CNVCTION/hyprnotes/master/install.sh | bash

Quick Start

hyprnotes # Start TUI
hyprnotes list # List notes (non-interactive)
hyprnotes --help # Help

In-App Commands

Type / when the buffer is empty to open the command menu:

| Command | Description | |----------|---------------------------------| | /new | Create a new note | | /load | Load an existing note | | /save | Save current note | | /list | Browse all notes | | /quit | Exit (auto-saves if dirty) |

Keyboard Shortcuts

| Key | Action | |----------|---------------------------------| | Ctrl+S | Save | | Ctrl+Q | Quit | | Ctrl+C | Quit if buffer empty | | Esc | Cancel overlay / close menu | | / | Open command menu (empty buffer)|

How It Works

  • Editor — Full multi-line text editing (arrows, delete, insert, word-wrap).
  • Autocomplete — Type / and get a dropdown of commands with fuzzy matching.
  • Persistent — Remembers which note you had open. Reopen picks up where you left off.
  • Plain text — Notes are ~/notes/*.txt. No database, no lock files, no format.
  • Auto-save — On quit with unsaved changes, you're prompted to save.

Use Cases

VPS / Remote Server

ssh myserver
notes # quick jot on a remote machine

Termius / Mobile

# Works great in Termius and other mobile SSH clients
notes list # quick list without TUI

Scratch Pad

echo "Buy milk" >> ~/notes/todo.txt
notes # open and edit

Architecture

Built on @earendil-works/pi-tui — a lightweight TUI library — stripped of all AI features:

  • EditorEditor component (multi-line, autocomplete, clipboard)
  • SelectList — Dropdown picker (arrow keys, descriptions, scroll)
  • Input — Single-line input (for title prompts)
  • ProcessTerminal — Terminal abstraction (raw mode, resize, Kitty protocol)

No React, no Ink, no frameworks. Just battle-tested TUI primitives.

Development

git clone https://github.com/cnvction/hyprnotes.git
cd hyprnotes
npm install
npm run build
node dist/index.js
