Inertbox
Wrap external text before you paste it into a coding agent.
It makes the boundary legible and portable. It does not make it obeyed.
Status: public alpha — published to npm as
inertbox (0.1.0-alpha.0).
When you paste external content into a coding agent — a log, an issue body, a
spec, another model's output — instruction-shaped text inside it ("ignore
previous instructions", "run this command") arrives in the same channel as your
real instruction. inertbox wrap turns that content into a clearly delimited
block that states it is data, not instructions, with a collision-safe fence
and a sha256 stamp. inertbox check verifies a wrapped document later:
structure first, then bytes + hash.

- Anchors.
[INERTBOX v<N> begin <tag>]/[INERTBOX v<N> end <tag>], each alone on its own line.<tag>is lowercase hex derived from the content so that neither anchor line occurs inside it — nesting a wrapped document, or embedding one in a larger paste, stays unambiguous.checklocates wrappers by the begin-anchor pattern only, never by title or prose. - Version.
<N>is the format version, present in both anchors. An unknown version is an explicit "document is newer than this tool" error, never a silent parse failure. - Prose is non-normative. Lines between the begin anchor and the metadata run are guidance for the reader; wording, locale, and line count may change without breaking verification.
- Metadata. The contiguous
key: valuerun immediately before the opening fence. Required:source(single line, control characters refused at wrap time),bytes(byte count of the original input),sha256(full 64-char lowercase hex over the original input bytes). Unknown keys (e.g.generated) are tolerated.source: -means stdin. - Fence. The opening line is
max(3, longest backtick run in content + 1)backticks plustext; the closing line is exactly that run, alone. A fence can never collide with the content by construction. - Newline canonicalization.
wrapwrites exactly one LF between content and the closing fence — always, even for empty content or content that already ends with a newline.checkstrips exactly that one LF before hashing, soabcandabc\nstay distinguishable and both verify. - Hash domain.
bytes/sha256cover the original input bytes only; the anchors, prose, andsourceline are not integrity-protected. - The wrapped document is an LF-only, newline-sensitive artifact. If a tool
converts it to CRLF in transit,
checkfails with a targeted "EOL-converted" diagnostic. When committing wrapped docs to git, exempt them from EOL conversion (e.g.*.inert.md -textin.gitattributes). - Invalid UTF-8 input is refused at wrap time (a lossy decode would make the stamped hash permanently unverifiable). Decode or base64 binary content first.
What check verifies — and when it is useful
check is structure-first: it lints well-formedness (anchors paired, metadata
parseable, fence intact and collision-safe, nothing smuggled between the
closing fence and the end anchor), then asserts bytes and sha256 equality.
Exit codes: 0 verified, 1 malformed or mismatch, 2 usage error.
Honest framing: in an immediate wrap-then-paste, nothing has a chance to change
the bytes — there check mainly guarantees well-formedness. The hash earns its
keep when wrapping and consumption are separated in time or by transit: wrapped
external docs committed to a repo (verify in CI like a lockfile), documents that
crossed editors, chat tools, or another model's token stream. The hash detects
accidental drift; it is not a provenance or tamper-proof mechanism (anyone can
re-wrap altered content).
Heuristic scan (opt-in)
wrap --scan prints risk signals (English/Korean seed rules: instruction
override, prompt exfiltration, tool invocation, …) to stderr. It is off by
default, deliberately: the seed rules flag ordinary developer text — "run the
command", markdown headings — so signals are advisory only, never part of the
wrapped output, and never affect the exit code.
Library core
The CLI sits on a small surface-agnostic ESM core, usable directly:

Claude Code hook (example)
A UserPromptSubmit hook adapter lives in
examples/claude-code-hook/ — kept as an
example, not a primary surface. Note its limit: the hook adds an annotation
via additionalContext; it does not replace the prompt, so the original marked
text still reaches the model alongside it.
Currently implemented
inertboxCLI:wrap(file/stdin → INERTBOX v1 document,--source,--timestamp,--scan) andcheck(structure lint + bytes + sha256, exit-code contract).- INERTBOX v1 wrapped-document format as specified above.
- Surface-agnostic boundary-object core:
parse/detect/compile/process, four render targets, delimiter-safety machinery. - Tests: hook smoke 10, core 61, wrap/CLI 50 — 121 total via
npm test. The wrap suite encodes the empirically confirmed format traps (trailing-newline canonicalization, nested wraps, metadata-lookalike content, EOL conversion, source header injection, invalid UTF-8) as regressions. - Claude Code
UserPromptSubmithook as a core-backed example adapter.
Planned
Candidates only — not committed scope: a playground (before/after visualization), React components for displaying boundary objects, an HTML renderer strictly as another projection of the boundary object.
Design intent
- The CLI is the product surface; the framework is the library.
wrap+checkcover the actual habit — pasting external text into an agent — in one command; the boundary-object pipeline stays available underneath. - Legible, not enforced. Renderers and the wrapped format make the boundary explicit to the model. This is probabilistic hygiene, not a control — the canonical line: it makes the boundary legible and portable; it does not make it obeyed.
- Deterministic and inspectable. No randomness anywhere: anchor tags and delimiters are content-derived, timestamps are opt-in, the same input always wraps to the same document. Malformed input degrades conservatively with explicit warnings and targeted diagnostics.
- Byte-exact or refused. The format never guesses: lossy decodes are refused, the trailing-newline bit is preserved by construction, and verification distinguishes structural failures from integrity failures.
Limitations
- It does not prevent prompt injection; the boundary is advisory to the model.
- The hash detects accidental post-wrap drift; it does not prove origin or stop deliberate re-wrapping.
- Marker-based
parse(library) is not collision-proof; collisions degrade to advisory warnings. --scanheuristics false-positive on ordinary developer text; that is why they are opt-in and advisory.
Non-goals
This project is not:
- prompt-injection prevention
- a complete security control
- a replacement for model-side safety or tool permission policy
- sandboxing, CSP, or an HTML sanitizer
- a provenance / signing scheme
- a SaaS, dashboard, browser extension, or policy engine
- vendor-specific
