Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

Queue of tasks, with options to cancel and retry

Usage

Initialize

Enqueue a job

Order

Jobs run in priority order, highest first. Jobs of equal priority run in the order they were enqueued.

Only the job at the head of the queue is offered to startFilter: while it is held back, nothing behind it starts.

Timeouts

An attempt that outlasts timeout, counted from when that attempt started, fails with a timeout error and is offered to retryFilter like any other failure — so a job with retries left is given another attempt, and its own timeout.

Work that can be cancelled — a promise from this module's own promise library, or anything else with a cancel method — is cancelled when its attempt times out. A plain promise cannot be cancelled, so work behind one carries on unwatched: where that matters, as with an HTTP request, give the work its own means of giving up.

Cancelling

jobPromise.cancel();

A cancelled job's promise never settles, which is this module's promise library's own idiom for work that will not be finishing. Cancelling a job that is running frees the place it was occupying, so whatever was waiting behind it can start.

Get number of jobs running

jobsQueue.running.size

Get number of jobs queued

jobsQueue.queued.size

Destroy the queue (cancel all pending jobs)

Every job is cancelled, queued and running alike, and the queue stops reporting. A job enqueued afterwards throws.

Reports what the queue itself ran into rather than a job failing, which is the job promise's business: a job's own cancel method throwing, for instance.
