Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Next.js package for the Judoscale autoscaler

Readme

Judoscale for Next.js

Official Judoscale adapter package for Next.js applications running on a long-lived Node.js server (next start or equivalent — not serverless). It instruments the Node http / https server to collect queue time, application time, and utilization for every request (including App Router, Pages Router, Route Handlers, and RSC), without adding framework middleware.

Set up your Next.js app for autoscaling

  1. Install packages:
npm install judoscale-nextjs --save
  1. Enable the instrumentation hook (Next.js 14 needs this in next.config.js; Next.js 15+ enables it by default):
// next.config.js
/** @type {import('next').NextConfig} */
const nextConfig = {
  experimental: {
    instrumentationHook: true,
  },
}

module.exports = nextConfig
  1. Add instrumentation.ts (or .js) at the project root (or under src/ if you use a src/ layout):
// instrumentation.ts
export async function register() {
  if (process.env.NEXT_RUNTIME === 'nodejs') {
    const { register: registerJudoscale } = await import('judoscale-nextjs')
    registerJudoscale({
      // Same options as `new Judoscale({ ... })` from judoscale-node-core
      // log_level: 'debug',
    })
  }
}

Use the Node.js runtime only. This package patches Node's http.Server; it does not run in the Edge runtime. The NEXT_RUNTIME === 'nodejs' guard avoids loading it in Edge.

Optional: existing Judoscale instance (e.g. BullMQ)

export async function register() {
  if (process.env.NEXT_RUNTIME === 'nodejs') {
    await import('judoscale-bullmq')
    const { Judoscale, register: registerJudoscale } = await import('judoscale-nextjs')
    const redis = ... // ioredis instance

    registerJudoscale({
      judoscale: new Judoscale({
        redis,
      }),
    })
  }
}

Custom server (Express + next())

If you use a custom Node server with Express, prefer judoscale-express and register its middleware instead of this package.

What is not supported

  • Vercel / serverless / per-request isolates — The reporter expects a long-running process. Use Judoscale worker adapters or a self-hosted web dyno where next start stays up.
  • Edge Middleware / Edge runtime — Not instrumented.

Configuration

Same options as other Judoscale Node adapters (logger, log_level, etc.). See judoscale-express README.

Troubleshooting

Once installed, you should see something like this in your development log:

[Judoscale] Reporter not started: JUDOSCALE_URL is not set

In production where JUDOSCALE_URL is set, you should see:

[Judoscale] Reporter starting, will report every 10 seconds

Enable debug logs with JUDOSCALE_LOG_LEVEL=debug.
