Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Knockout-hint

Knockout binding handler that allows you to display hints on the page about any background work that's performing right now.

Gimme it right now!!!

npm install knockout-hint

Intro

How many times did you used visible binding to display / hide any element on the page to show that any background work is performing?

Please wait, we are saving... Searching data... Connecting to the server...

Stop using visible binding!

Knockout-hint to the rescue!

Knockout hint binding allows you take care of such things.

<button data-bind="click: load">Load</button>
<span data-bind="hint: isLoading">
  Loading...
</span>
var VM = function () {
    var _isLoading = ko.observable(false),
            _load = function () {
                // background work goes here...
                _isLoading(true);

                // emulating the work
                setTimeout(function () {
                    _isLoading(false);
                }, 1000);

            };

    return {
        isLoading:_isLoading,
        load:_load
    };
};

ko.applyBindings(new VM());

Features

The previous example is what you need to get started. Knockout will take care of the hint property, and will show, or hide the hint element on the page.

Default implementation is that it's using .hidden CSS class to hide the element. That CSS rule will be added to the bottom of the page by default. You shouldn't care of that.

In case you want use your own CSS class to make the hint hidden, you can override the defaults by passing binding options.

Options:

<button data-bind="click: load">Load</button>
<span data-bind="hint: isLoading, hintOptions: { hiddenClass: 'custom-hidden' }">
    Loading... (This is hidden by custom css class)
</span>

That makes it very easy to integrate with your CSS library (hello Twitter Bootstrap :smiley: ), or any other logic on the page.

I should care of the hint element and additional VM property... REALLY?

Yes! :wink:

This is very simple helper, and you need insert all hint elements by your own. That makes it very flexible for usage. There is no any dynamically inserted html element. You can place so many hint elements on the page as you wish.
