Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

localmd

A local markdown editor with a formatting toolbar, live preview, and a sidebar of your .md files — backed by a real folder on your disk. No build step, no account, no internet connection required after install.

Usage

npx localmd

Opens http://localhost:4321 in your browser and reads/writes .md files in ~/markdown-notes by default.

Point it at a different folder or port:

npx localmd ~/Documents/my-notes --port 5000

Features

  • H1/H2/H3, bold, italic, strikethrough, inline code, lists, blockquotes, links, code blocks, horizontal rules — via toolbar buttons or shortcuts (Ctrl+1/2/3, Ctrl+B, Ctrl+I, Ctrl+K)
  • Live preview pane
  • Sidebar listing every note in your folder — click to open, + New to create
  • Ctrl+S saves straight to disk
