Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

lowkeyvc-mcp

An MCP server that gives an AI agent live access to LowkeyVC — the VC deal-flow signal engine. It surfaces the two datapoints LowkeyVC is built around:

  • The signal — a tracked VC just followed a startup.
  • Convergence — how many tracked VCs have piled onto the same startup.

The server is a thin, read-only wrapper over the hosted LowkeyVC REST API. Every figure it returns matches the public feed and is reproducible from the archive.

Install

You need a LowkeyVC API key (a lk_... token). Ask your LowkeyVC operator to issue one.

Claude Code

claude mcp add lowkeyvc --env LOWKEYVC_API_KEY=lk_your_key -- npx -y lowkeyvc-mcp

Claude Desktop / other MCP clients

Add to your client's MCP config (for Claude Desktop, claude_desktop_config.json):

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "lowkeyvc": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "lowkeyvc-mcp"],
      "env": {
        "LOWKEYVC_API_KEY": "lk_your_key"
      }
    }
  }
}

Restart the client. The lowkeyvc tools become available immediately — no other setup, no local checkout.

Configuration

| Env var | Required | Default | Notes | |---------|----------|---------|-------| | LOWKEYVC_API_KEY | yes | — | Your lk_... bearer token. | | LOWKEYVC_API_URL | no | https://lowkey-vc-e8b26fb6d2c3.herokuapp.com | Override to point at staging, a custom API domain, or a self-hosted instance. |

Tools

| Tool | What it does | |------|--------------| | list_signals | Net-new VC→startup follows, cursor-paginated (omit since for the head, then pass back next_cursor). | | list_startups | The convergence leaderboard, ranked by how many tracked VCs converged in-window. founders: true filters to deal flow. | | get_startup | One startup's detail by X username. | | list_investors | The tracked-VC roster, ordered by in-window activity. | | get_investor | One investor's profile plus their recent in-window follows. |

Convergence terms: observed_investors are VCs watched following in the window (the strong signal); inferred_investors predate tracking (context, kept separate); total_investors is their sum.

Development

npm install
npm test # unit + in-memory integration tests
npm run build # compile to dist/
npm run smoke # live check against the API (needs a real LOWKEYVC_API_KEY)
