Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

macos-fan-control-client

Typed Node client for the fan_control CLI — read and force Apple Silicon fan speed through the SMC.

It is a thin, dependency-free binding over the core's documented CLI + JSON contract (CONTRACT.md). It knows no SMC keys: it runs the core and returns typed results.

Install

npm install macos-fan-control-client

The fan_control binary must be installed first (it is what actually talks to the SMC).

Usage

import { readStatus, setPercent, setAutomatic, rpm, mode, average } from "macos-fan-control-client";

const status = await readStatus(true); // true = also read CPU/GPU temperatures
// { fanCount, fans: [{ index, actual, minimum, maximum, target, percent, forced }], temperatures }

await setPercent(70); // force every fan to 70% of its own range (needs the scoped sudo rule)
await setAutomatic(); // hand every fan back to SMC firmware control
await coolUntil(100, 50); // force maximum and start a background release below 50 °C (returns at once)
await setAutomatic(); // cancels the background cooler and returns every fan to firmware control

Reads (readStatus) need no privileges. Writes (setPercent, setMaximum, setAutomatic, runGuard, coolUntil) run the core under sudo -n and require the one scoped NOPASSWD rule that scripts/install.sh installs.

The binary path is /usr/local/bin/fan_control by default; override it with the FAN_CONTROL_BINARY environment variable.

API

| Export | Description | |---|---| | readStatus(temps?) | Full FanStatus; set temps to include CPU/GPU temperatures. | | setPercent(percent) | Force every fan to a percentage of its own range. | | setMaximum() | Force every fan to its maximum. | | setAutomatic() | Return every fan to firmware control. | | runGuard(ceilingCelsius?) | Revert to automatic if a sensor group exceeds the ceiling. | | coolUntil(percent?, belowCelsius?, ceilingCelsius?) | Force a speed and start a background watcher that releases to firmware below the threshold (defaults 100% / 50 °C). | | rpm(value) | Format RPM for display. | | mode(fans) | "Auto", "Forced" or "Mixed". | | average(fans) | Mean load percentage across fans. | | estimate(fan, percent) | Preview the target RPM a percentage maps to. |

Failures throw FanControlError with the core's message (e.g. binary missing, or the sudo rule not installed).
