Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

magknit

A simple yet buggy version control CLI for your project.

Installation

npm install -g magknit

Or run locally:

npm install
node index.js <command>

Commands

  • magknit help - Show available commands

  • magknit init - Initialize a new magknit project

    • Creates .magknit/ directory with config
    • Creates .magknit_ignore file (like .gitignore)
    • Defaults to branch "main"

  • magknit switch <branch> - Switch to a different branch

    • Saves current files to .magknit/branches/<current-branch>/
    • Only saves top-level files (respects .magknit_ignore)
    • Copies files from .magknit/branches/<branch>/ to the current directory

How it works

Magknit stores your project states in .magknit/branches/ directories.

Limitations

  • Only handles top-level files (no subdirectories yet)
  • No other commands than the ones listed above
