Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Insta MCP Server

MCP (Model Context Protocol) server for Instagram integration.

Features

  • Comprehensive Access: View user profiles, timelines, stories, and detailed post information.
  • Smart Engagement: Like posts, comments, and follow users directly from your MCP client.
  • Search & Discovery: Powerful search capabilities to find accounts and explore content.
  • Secure Authentication: Robust login handling with support for Two-Factor Authentication (2FA).
  • Developer Ready: Seamless integration with Claude Desktop, Cursor, and other MCP-compatible tools.

Installation for MCP Clients

This MCP server can be used with MCP-compatible clients like Claude Desktop and Cursor IDE. Follow the instructions below to configure the server in your client.

Prerequisites

  • Node.js 18+ or 20+ installed
  • Instagram account credentials (IG_USERNAME and IG_PASSWORD)

For Claude Desktop

  1. Locate your Claude Desktop configuration file:

    • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
    • Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
    • Linux: ~/.config/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
  2. Open the configuration file (create it if it doesn't exist) and add the following to the mcpServers section:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "mcp-instagram": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "mcp-instagram"
      ],
      "env": {
        "IG_USERNAME": "your_instagram_username",
        "IG_PASSWORD": "your_instagram_password"
      }
    }
  }
}
  1. Replace the credentials:

    • Replace your_instagram_username with your Instagram username
    • Replace your_instagram_password with your Instagram password
  2. Restart Claude Desktop for the changes to take effect. And you should see the Instagram MCP server in the list of available tools.

For Cursor IDE

  1. Locate your Cursor MCP configuration file:

    • Workspace config: .cursor/mcp.json (in your project root)
    • Global config: ~/.cursor/mcp.json
  2. Open the configuration file (create it if it doesn't exist) and add the following to the mcpServers section:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "mcp-instagram": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "mcp-instagram"
      ],
      "env": {
        "IG_USERNAME": "your_instagram_username",
        "IG_PASSWORD": "your_instagram_password"
      }
    }
  }
}
  1. Replace the credentials:

    • Replace your_instagram_username with your Instagram username
    • Replace your_instagram_password with your Instagram password
  2. Restart Cursor for the changes to take effect.

Alternative: Using Local Installation

If you've cloned the repository locally, you can use the absolute path instead:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "mcp-instagram": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "/absolute/path/to/mcp-instagram"
      ],
      "env": {
        "IG_USERNAME": "your_instagram_username",
        "IG_PASSWORD": "your_instagram_password"
      }
    }
  }
}

Note: Replace /absolute/path/to/mcp-instagram with the actual absolute path to your cloned repository.

Security Notes

  • Never commit your credentials to version control
  • The env section in the MCP configuration is the recommended way to provide credentials
  • Credentials are never requested from the LLM - they must be provided via environment variables
  • If you have 2FA enabled on your Instagram account, you'll need to complete the 2FA flow using the instagram_complete_2fa tool after initial login

  • Regularly review Instagram's Terms of Service and comply with all applicable laws and regulations

TL;DR: It's just common sense, really. Don't go liking 10,000 posts in an hour or following everyone on the planet. Instagram doesn't like robots pretending to be humans. Be cool, don't overdo it, and you'll probably be fine. Probably.
