Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

mcp-proxy-guard

Sub-35µs In-Process Security Proxy & Credential Scrubber for Model Context Protocol (MCP)

npm version License: MIT Latency

A zero-dependency, lightweight security proxy wrapper for any Model Context Protocol (MCP) server running in Claude Desktop, Cursor, or Windsurf.

Why Do You Need This?

When you connect Claude Desktop or Cursor to an MCP server (filesystem, terminal, sqlite, postgres), the AI agent has raw access to execute commands on your machine or database.

Prompt guardrails and cloud filters do not inspect tool execution. If an agent hallucinates or encounters prompt injection, it can execute:

  • rm -rf / or DROP TABLE accounts
  • Exfiltrate API keys (sk-proj-..., AKIA...) or .env files across tool logs.

mcp-proxy-guard wraps your MCP server, intercepting JSON-RPC 2.0 messages across stdio in under 35 microseconds:

  1. Destructive Tool Veto: Intercepts and blocks destructive arguments (rm -rf, mkfs, DROP TABLE, TRUNCATE, /etc/shadow).
  2. In-Flight Secret Redaction: Scrubs OpenAI, Anthropic, AWS, GitHub, Stripe, and private keys from tool inputs and outputs.
  3. Zero Configuration: Simply prepend npx -y mcp-proxy-guard -- to your existing MCP server command.

Quickstart (Claude Desktop)

Open your claude_desktop_config.json and wrap any server with mcp-proxy-guard:

Before:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "filesystem": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem", "/Users/me/projects"]
    }
  }
}

After (Protected in <35µs):

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "filesystem": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "mcp-proxy-guard", "--", "npx", "-y", "@modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem", "/Users/me/projects"]
    }
  }
}

CLI Usage

# Run self-test verification
npx mcp-proxy-guard test

# Inspect active security status
npx mcp-proxy-guard status

# Verify Sovereign Enterprise Clearance
npx mcp-proxy-guard activate

Programmatic API

import { evaluateToolCall, scrubSecrets } from 'mcp-proxy-guard';

// 1. In-process tool check
const verdict = evaluateToolCall('execute_sql', { query: 'DROP TABLE users;' });
console.log(verdict.allowed); // false
console.log(verdict.reason);  // "[MCP-PROXY-GUARD VETO] Destructive pattern intercepted..."

// 2. Secret scrubber
const scrubbed = scrubSecrets({ payload: "token sk-proj-1234567890abcdef" });
console.log(scrubbed.data.payload); // "token [REDACTED_OPENAI_KEY]"
