Mellow is about collaboration, not commands. A cool, capable assistant that lives in your terminal. No friction, no noise—just thoughtful responses and smooth workflows.

Quick Start

Install from npm

npm install -g mellow-ai
mellow-ai

On first run, you'll be prompted to enter your OpenRouter API key. Get one from openrouter.ai.

Development Setup

# Install deps
bun install

# Configure secrets
cp .env.example .env
# Add your OpenRouter API key to .env

# Run in dev mode (Node runtime)
bun run dev
# or run with Bun runtime
bun run dev:bun

Grab an API key from openrouter.ai and set OPENROUTER_API_KEY. Optionally set OPENROUTER_MODEL to choose a default model.

What You Get

• Streaming chat — Responses flow in character-by-character with a live preview.
• Command palette — Type / to reveal commands, autocomplete with Tab or →.
• Model selector — Browse OpenRouter models inline and swap instantly with /model.
• Search controls — Toggle web search with Shift+Tab or fine-tune it in /settings.
• Grayscale UI — A quiet interface with an ASCII banner, status line, and message markers.

Commands & Shortcuts

• /model — Open the model selector (type to search, ↑/↓ to move, Enter to choose).
• /clear — Reset the conversation.
• /settings — Adjust search engine and max results.
• Shift+Tab — Toggle web search without leaving the prompt.
• Esc — Clear the current input.
• Ctrl+C — Exit immediately.
• Arrow keys — Navigate command suggestions, settings, and model lists.
