Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Merciless Simplification pi package: skill + micro extension for systematic code complexity reduction via micro-tickets

Readme

⚔️ Merciless Simplification

AI Agent Framework for systematically eliminating code complexity while preserving 100% externally observable behavior (backward compatible, implementation-only changes).

👀 Read the Complete Guide →

Pi Skill + Extension

This repo ships the methodology as a pi package — a skill (methodology body) plus a micro extension (commands) — installable from git or npm:

# git install (always in sync with main):
pi install git:github.com/mfenderov/merciless-simplification

# npm install (released versions, auto-updated with pi update --extensions):
pi install npm:merciless-simplification

Then, in a pi session:

/merciless-simplify [targets...] # run the methodology (analyze -> tickets -> approval -> execute)
/skill:merciless-simplification # load the skill directly

Or load it directly from a local checkout without installing:

pi --skill ./skills/merciless-simplification
pi -e ./extensions/merciless-simplification.ts

Package files: extensions/merciless-simplification.ts (command + tool shim), skills/merciless-simplification/ (SKILL.md wrapper + references/methodology.md snapshot).

Auto-invocation (Tidy First): the extension appends Kent Beck's principle — make the change easy (this might be hard), then make the easy change — to every turn's system prompt, so the agent calls merciless_simplify before modifying complex code. It also shows a non-blocking nudge when you edit a file over a complexity threshold (default 300 lines; tune with MERCILESS_SIMPLIFY_COMPLEX_LINES). The human approval gate always stays in the loop.

Releases: a GitHub Action bumps the patch version, tags vX.Y.Z, and publishes to npm on every push to main touching the methodology, skill, extension, or README. Publishing is tokenless via npm trusted publishers (OIDC) — no tokens anywhere, with automatic provenance attestations. The npm package is set to require 2FA and disallow tokens, so CI is the only publisher.

Quick Start

Copy-paste this command to any AI agent:

Apply merciless simplification methodology from https://mfenderov.github.io/merciless-simplification to systematically eliminate complexity in this codebase.

Local Development

gh repo clone mfenderov/merciless-simplification
cd merciless-simplification
brew install hugo
hugo server

Documentation Maintenance

Ultra-Simple Approach:

  • One file: content/_index.md contains the complete guide
  • One command: hugo server to preview locally
  • One output: Hugo renders it as the website

Making Changes:

  1. Edit content/_index.md
  2. Commit your changes
  3. Done!

Why this approach?

  • Single source of truth - just one file to maintain
  • No build scripts, no complexity
  • AI agents can fetch the complete guide from GitHub or the live site
  • Hugo automatically generates the beautiful website
  • Note: skills/merciless-simplification/references/methodology.md is a snapshot of content/_index.md — update both when revising the methodology
  • Pushing to main auto-releases a new version to npm (see Releases above)
