Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

metalsmith-markdown-it-easy

A Metalsmith plugin to convert markdown files using markdown-it, an easy extendable Node.js module for multimarkdown features.

Inspired by metalsmith-markdown by segment.io.

Install

npm install metalsmith-markdown-it-easy

Javascript Usage

Simple without options

Pass the metalsmith-markdown-it-easy plugin to Metalsmith with the use method:

var metalsmith = require('metalsmith');
var markdownIt = require('metalsmith-markdown-it-easy');

metalsmith.use(markdownIt());

With options

Pass options to the metalsmith-markdown-it-easy plugin as you would pass them to markdown-it. Then pass the metalsmith-markdown-it-easy plugin to Metalsmith with the use method:

var metalsmith = require('metalsmith');
var markdownIt = require('metalsmith-markdown-it-easy');

metalsmith.use(markdownIt({
    html: true,
    linkify: true
}));

Please refer to markdown-it for supported options.

With options and markdown-it plugins/extensions

Pass options to the metalsmith-markdown-it-easy plugin as you would pass them to markdown-it.

Add another key plugins to the options. Require the markdown-it plugins you want to use and push them to the plugins Array. If you have options for a plugin, add this plugin followed by its options to another Array as you would pass them to the original markdown-it plugin.

Then pass the metalsmith-markdown-it-easy plugin to Metalsmith with the use method:

var metalsmith = require('metalsmith');
var markdownIt = require('metalsmith-markdown-it-easy');
var markdownItPlugin = require('some markdown-it plugin');
var markdownItPluginWithOptions = require('some markdown-it plugin with options');

metalsmith.use(markdownIt({
    html: true,
    linkify: true,
    plugins: [
        markdownItPlugin,
        [markdownItPluginWithOptions, 'option1', option2, {option3: 'options3 value'}]
    ]
}));

Please refer to markdown-it for supported options.

Please refer to markdown-it-plugins list for supported plugins and their options.

Overwrite renderer rules

Pass options to the metalsmith-markdown-it-easy plugin as you would pass them to markdown-it.

Add another key renderer to the options. Add the key rules and to that the rule you want to overwrite, e.g. image with your renderer function as value, e.g. fooImageRenderer.

Then pass the metalsmith-markdown-it-easy plugin to Metalsmith with the use method:

var metalsmith = require('metalsmith');
var markdownIt = require('metalsmith-markdown-it-easy');

function fooImageRenderer(tokens, idx, options, env, self) {
    // new rendering logic
}

metalsmith.use(markdownIt({
    html: true,
    linkify: true,
    renderer: {
        rules: {
            image: fooImageRenderer
        }
    }
}));

If you need the default rule again, you'll find it in your renderer functions self object stored under key default_rules, e.g. default_rules.image.

function fooImageRenderer(tokens, idx, options, env, self) {
    if (some_condition) {
        // new rendering logic
    }
    else {
        // use default rule
        return self.default_rules.image(tokens, idx, options, env, self);
    }
}

You may not only overwrite rules but other renderer keys as well.
