Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

<model-viewer data-debug>

<model-viewer data-debug> is a visual debugging layer on top of @google/model-viewer.

Visually debugging model-viewer component

Installing

The <model-viewer data-debug> library is intended for development purposes and can be included directly via various CDNs such as unpkg.com:

<!-- consider including the latest <model-viewer> build from the website -->
<script async src="https://modelviewer.dev/node_modules/@google/model-viewer/dist/model-viewer.js"></script>

<!-- include the debugger -->
<script async src="https://unpkg.com/model-viewer-debugger"></script>

API

On page load, the debugger will automatically apply to any <model-viewer> components that contain a [data-debug] attribute.

Annotations, the camera and model can currently be debugged:

<!-- debug everything -->
<model-viewer data-debug></model-viewer>

<!-- debug just the camera and annotations / hotspots -->
<model-viewer data-debug="camera annotations">
    <button slot="hotspot-0"></button>
    <button slot="hotspot-1"></button>
</model-viewer>

<!-- debug a single annotation -->
<model-viewer>
    <button slot="hotspot-0" data-debug></button>
    <button slot="hotspot-1"></button>
</model-viewer>

To refresh, remove, or include new <model-viewer> components after page load, you can use the ModelViewerDebugger available in the global scope:

// clean up and reload debgugging on all <model-viewer> components
ModelViewerDebugger.refresh();

// remove debugging from all <model-viewer> components
ModelViewerDebugger.reset();

// remove debugging from a single <model-viewer> component
ModelViewerDebugger.reset(document.querySelector('model-viewer'));

// basic stats from all <model-viewer> components
ModelViewerDebugger.stats();

// basic stats from a single <model-viewer> component
ModelViewerDebugger.stats(document.querySelector('model-viewer'));

Browser support & considerations

<model-viewer data-debug> is really only intended for use in your bleeding-edge development environment(!) and as such very little attention has been paid to browser support. Please feel free to suggest fixes for any glaringly obvious cross-browser issues. IE11 is not supported.

| | Chrome | Firefox | Safari | Edge | IE11 | | -------- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Desktop | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | ❌ | | Mobile | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | ❌ |

Also keep in mind that threejs isn't available on the global scope (it's a dependency of <model-viewer>) then it will be downloaded from the jsDelivr CDN at runtime. Not fun in a build environment!

Versioning and compatability

With Google's groovy <model-viewer> component still under development, it's incredibly likely that this debugger will intermittently stop working as that project evolves. To keep things simple I'll be doing my best to keep the major and minor versioning in sync (compatability-wise) between the two.
