Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

modmap-cli

v1.0.5

Published

CLI that maps modules to files/functions/lines with timezone-safe timestamps.

Readme

modmap-cli

modmap-cli is a cross-platform CLI tool that helps developers to identity which files and functions are being used in specific module or task.

🧩 Why modmap?

In large teams and growing codebases, when a developer finishes a module (e.g., "Payments"), and another developer picks it up days or weeks later, it's time-consuming to understand:

  • Which files are involved
  • Which functions were used
  • Which specific lines of code belong to a module

With modmap-cli, this mapping becomes explicit, searchable, and centralized in a .modmap directory.

🚀 Installation

npm install -g modmap-cli

Node Version Required: Node.js v14+

NPM Version Required: NPM v6+

🔧 Commands

1. Initialize in your project

modmap init --tz UTC

Creates a .modmap/ directory and sets the default timezone.

2. Tag a module with file

modmap tag --module jobs --file src/jobs.js --desc "Initial job entry"

3. Tag a module with a function

modmap tag --module jobs --function createJob --desc "Validates and stores job entry"

4. Tag a module with a specific line number

modmap tag --module jobs --line src/utils/jobHelper.js:89 --desc "Validator for job title format"

5. Tag a module with file and function in the same command

modmap tag --module payments --file src/pay.js --function handlePayment --desc "Payment processing flow"

6. Query a module’s metadata

modmap query jobs

7. Change project-wide timezone (affects future entries only).

modmap config --tz Asia/Kolkata

WARNING: before changing timezone, take backup of all json files. If u enter wrong time zone then it will make timestamp NULL in all json files and there is no way to revert it back later.
