Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

MongoDB utilities for data import/export, schema analysis and more

Readme

MongoDB Toolkit

MongoDB Toolkit is a utility library that wraps utilities from MongoDB Compass for exporting data, importing data, analyzing schemas, and more.

Features

  • Export Data: Export MongoDB data to CSV or JSON files/streams.
  • Import Data: Import data from CSV or JSON files/streams into MongoDB.
  • Schema Analysis: Analyze MongoDB collections to generate schema definitions.

Installation

To install MongoDB Toolkit, use npm:

npm install mongodb-toolkit

To use the library with typescript, either set "skipLibCheck": false in your tsconfig.json or install type definitions:

npm i @types/json-schema @types/reservoir -D

Usage

Examples use MongoDB Sample Datasets

Export Data to CSV

import { exportCSV } from 'mongodb-toolkit';

const mongoClient = new MongoClient(process.env['MONGO_URI']!);

const cursor = mongoClient
  .db('sample_airbnb')
  .collection('listingsAndReviews')
  .aggregate([{ $limit: 10 }, { $project: { listing_url: 1 } }]);

exportCSV(cursor, fs.createWriteStream('output.csv'), {
  delimiter: ';',
  progressCallback: (idx, phase) => {
    console.log(phase, idx);
  },
})
  .then((result) => {
    console.log('Export result', result);
  })
  .catch((err) => {
    console.error(err);
  })
  .finally(() => {
    mongoClient.close();
    process.exit(0);
  });

Import CSV File

CSV content (import.csv):

id,name
1,John
2,Jane
3,Doe
import { importCSV } from 'mongodb-toolkit';

const mongoClient = new MongoClient(process.env['MONGO_URI']!);

const coll = mongoClient.db('mydb').collection('mycollection');

importCSV(coll, fs.createReadStream('./import.csv'), {
  fields: { id: 'int', name: 'string' },
  delimiter: ',',
})
  .then((result) => {
    console.log('Import Result:', result);
  })
  .catch((err) => {
    console.error(err);
  })
  .finally(() => {
    mongoClient.close();
    process.exit(0);
  });

Analyze Schema

import { analyzeSchema } from 'mongodb-toolkit';

const mongoClient = new MongoClient(process.env['MONGO_URI']!);

// Sample 100 docs
const cursor = mongoClient
  .db('sample_mflix')
  .collection('comments')
  .aggregate([{ $limit: 100 }]);

const controller = new AbortController();

// Abort the analysis after 1 second
setTimeout(() => {
  controller.abort();
}, 1000);

analyzeSchema(cursor, { abortSignal: controller.signal })
  .then((schema) => schema.getMongoDBJsonSchema())
  .then((jsonSchema) => {
    if (!schema) {
      // Aborted
      throw new Error('Schema analysis aborted');
    }
    console.log(JSON.stringify(jsonSchema, null, 2));
  })
  .catch((err) => {
    console.error(err);
  })
  .finally(() => {
    mongoClient.close();
    process.exit(0);
  });

Output

{
  "bsonType": "object",
  "required": ["_id", "date", "email", "movie_id", "name", "text"],
  "properties": {
    "_id": {
      "bsonType": "objectId"
    },

      "bsonType": "date"
    },
