Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

Access tokens

The purpose of this module is to create and validate access tokens, that can be used between different services, without them sharing data.

Take my two microservices mscp-entity and mscp-notes as examples. mscp-notes doesn't have any user database or notion of permissions. It does however (optionally) use this module, such that mscp-entity can create a link to a note, that will:

  • Only provide required permission (read/write)
  • Only provide access to the specific note
  • Expire after 1-2 days.

The link (token) cannot be calculated by someone else, as it uses the sha265 hash function with a salt. The hashed value includes the entity id (in above example; the note id), the permission (read/write/...) and the current date.

By using the current date, a problem arises if you create a link before midnight and use it after. Therefore it also validates against a second hash of "yesterday".

Note that access will be cached and the cache is stored for 48 hours, which makes the access validation very fast if called multiple times.

The permission text can be anything that you want and you will only get access if it matches exactly.

Usage

Generate token:

Validate token:

console.log(gotAccess ? "Access granted" : "Access denied")

In addition to validateAccess, there are the following helper methods available:

  • validateAccessReadWriteThrow(token, identifier, requireWriteAccess): It validates the token against the permissions "write" and "read". If requireWriteAccess is true, then only "write" can cause access. If the validation fails, an error is thrown.
  • validateAccessReadWriteThrow(token, identifier, requireWriteAccess): Same as the one above, but it returns a boolean instead of throwing.

Options:

  • secret: The salt used to generate hashes. Needs to be something kept "hidden". It IS optional, but in that case everyone can calculate the token for a resource!
  • alwaysFullAccess: If set to true, all validation is skipped and everything validates to true. Useful when you don't want to write code everywhere for if(accessCheckEnabled) accessManager.validateAccess(....).
