Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

node-myjohndeere

MyJohnDeere API helper library for node.js.

Installation

npm install --save myjohndeere
var MyJohnDeere = require('myjohndeere')

Usage

Getting request token (initial authorization)

var mjd = new MyJohnDeere(apiUrl, appId, appSecret)

mjd.getRequestToken(callbackUrl)
	.then(request => {
		// Save request.tokenSecret temporarily
		// Redirect to mjd.getAuthorizationUrl()
	})

Trading for access token (inside handler for callbackUrl)

var mjd = new MyJohnDeere(apiUrl, appId, appSecret)

// oauth_token and oauth_verifier are from URL query params
mjd.getAccessToken(oauth_token, requestTokenSecret, oauth_verifier)
	.then(access => {
		// Save access.token and access.tokenSecret - they're good for up to one year
	})

Making authorized requests

var mjd = new MyJohnDeere(apiUrl, appId, appSecret, accessToken, accessTokenSecret)

// getLinks() stores the top level API catalog in .links
mjd.getLinks().then(() => {
	mjd.get(mjd.links.files).end((err, apiRes) => {
		// JSON result in apiRes.body

		// can continue with e.g. mjd.get(apiRes.body.links.nextPage)
	})
})

Notes

  • Links (apiRes.body.links, apiRes.body.values[i].links) are transformed from arrays of dictionaries ([{rel: ..., uri: ...}]) into flat dictionaries ({self: <uri>, nextPage: <uri>, prevPage: <uri>}) for convenience.
  • .request([method='GET'], url, [options={}]) returns a pre-signed superagent request object configured to accept JSON and with support for relative URLs. If you need a different return type, simply override it with .set('Accept', ...).
  • .(get|post|put|delete) are convenience wrappers for .request.
  • Requires node 4.x or above.
  • URL interpolation is supported via the options parameter to .request and its convenience wrappers
    • e.g. mjd.get(mjd.links.organizationMaintenancePlans, {orgId: 12345})

Test server

A small express server is included for testing and as an example implementation. To use it, you'll need to drop in a settings.js file:

module.exports = {
	mjdEndpoint:  'https://apicert.soa-proxy.deere.com/platform',
	mjdAppId:     '...',
	mjdAppSecret: '...'
}

From there, just run node server.js in the module directory.
