Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

PlanetScale Concepts

Branches

PlanetScale databases use a Git-like branching model. Each branch is an isolated copy of your database schema that can be modified independently.

  • Production branches: Protected branches that receive production traffic
  • Development branches: Used for schema development and testing
  • Safe migrations: Automatic schema migration safeguards

Deploy Requests

Deploy requests are similar to pull requests. They allow you to:

  1. View schema differences between branches
  2. Request reviews from team members
  3. Deploy schema changes to production safely
  4. Automatically rollback if issues occur

Connection Credentials (Passwords)

PlanetScale generates unique connection credentials for each branch. Credentials can have different roles:

  • Admin: Full database access
  • Reader: Read-only access
  • Writer: Write-only access
  • ReadWriter: Read and write access

Error Handling

The node handles the following error scenarios:

| Status Code | Description | |-------------|-------------| | 400 | Bad Request - Invalid parameters | | 401 | Unauthorized - Invalid credentials | | 403 | Forbidden - Insufficient permissions | | 404 | Not Found - Resource doesn't exist | | 409 | Conflict - Resource already exists | | 422 | Unprocessable Entity - Validation error | | 429 | Too Many Requests - Rate limit exceeded |

All operations support the Continue on Fail option to handle errors gracefully in workflows.

Rate Limiting

PlanetScale API enforces a rate limit of 600 requests per minute per authentication token. The node automatically handles rate limit errors with descriptive messages.

For webhook test endpoints, there's an additional limit of 1 request per 20 seconds per webhook.

Security Best Practices

  1. Use Service Tokens with Minimal Permissions: Only grant the permissions your workflow needs
  2. Rotate Credentials Regularly: Periodically regenerate service tokens
  3. Enable Webhook Signature Verification: Always verify webhook signatures in production
  4. Use Separate Tokens per Environment: Don't share tokens between development and production
  5. Protect Connection Strings: Never expose database passwords in logs or outputs

Development

# Install dependencies
npm install

# Build the project
npm run build

# Run linting
npm run lint

# Run tests
npm test

# Run tests with coverage
npm run test:coverage

# Watch mode for development
npm run dev
