Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Typed, probabilistic decisions with Jev by TypeSafe AI for n8n workflows

Readme

n8n-nodes-typesafe-jev

Add a frontier-intelligence 'smart if-statement' to any n8n workflow — typed decisions with calibrated confidence in ~100ms, no prompt engineering.

Turn emails, support tickets, user prompts, and JSON state into decisions your workflow can use directly. Jev by TypeSafe AI evaluates typed questions rather than generating text for you to parse.

  • Choice: classify into one of your labels, with probabilities and confidence.
  • Score: get a fractional score against an ordered rubric, with probabilities and confidence.
  • Noul: get the probability that a yes/no question is true, with an optional boolean threshold.
  • Ask multiple questions of the same primitive in a single call.
  • Keep every native answer, the original input, model version, token usage, and measured latency.

The ~100ms headline describes TypeSafe's target use case, not a latency guarantee. TypeSafe reports roughly 70–500ms end-to-end; network distance, workload, queueing, and retries matter. Plain-language question instructions and useful labels are still required.

Setup · Operations · Outputs · Examples · Cost comparison · Development

30-second setup

On self-hosted n8n:

  1. Open Settings → Community Nodes → Install, enter n8n-nodes-typesafe-jev, and install.
  2. Create a TypeSafe Jev API credential. Paste the API key from console.typesafe.ai.
  3. Drag Jev (TypeSafe AI) onto the canvas, select your credential, choose an operation, and add a question. State defaults to {{ $json }}.

You need an active TypeSafe account and API key. To run the node from source, see the local development instructions.

Compatibility

  • Target: current self-hosted n8n, with n8n-workflow 2.16.0 as the development/test baseline.
  • Package runtime: Node.js 22+; the installed n8n release may require a newer minimum.
  • The prompt-guard example also uses n8n's built-in Basic LLM Chain and OpenAI Chat Model nodes.
  • This package uses the official @typesafe-ai/sdk runtime dependency. It is not an n8n-verified / n8n Cloud package: current verification rules prohibit runtime dependencies.

Operations

Every operation accepts the same State and Model fields. Add one or more questions using Add Question; answer keys must be unique and start with a letter, followed by letters, numbers, or underscores. constructor and prototype are reserved.

| Operation | Fields per question | Output | | --------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | Choice | Answer Key, Question Instructions, 1–255 unique options with optional descriptions | Selected label, probability per label, API confidence | | Score | Answer Key, Question Instructions, 2–10 unique ordered level labels | Expected score from 0 to N−1, probability per level, rubric legend, API confidence | | Noul | Answer Key, Question Instructions, optional Settings → Threshold (0–1) | Probability of yes; optional local boolean decision |

Score levels are ordered from first to last, for example low, medium, high. Their positions are 0, 1, and 2. A result of 1.6 is valid; it is not rounded to a label or normalized to 0–1.

A Noul threshold is applied locally as probability >= threshold. It is not sent to the model. Leave it absent to work directly with the probability. Threshold 0 and threshold 1 are both supported.

State: text or JSON

Use a string such as {{ $json.body }}, a JSON object expression such as {{ $json }}, an array, or pasted JSON.

| State Format | Behavior | | -------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | Auto (default) | Accept objects/arrays directly. Parse strings beginning with { or [. If parsing fails, send the original text and expose a warning in the output pane and warnings array. | | JSON | Parse serialized JSON strictly, or accept a JSON object/array expression. Invalid JSON stops execution before the API call. | | Text | Send the string unchanged, including leading/trailing whitespace and JSON-looking content. |

Empty text, null state, unsupported values, circular references, and non-finite numbers in objects are rejected. Ordinary text like 123 remains text in Auto mode. Binary attachments pass through to the output but are not sent to Jev; extract their text upstream.

Model pinning

The default is jev-1.13.0, the documented full ID for the Jev 1.13 release. Pin this release for production after evaluating your thresholds; do not assume the shortened jev-1.13 is a supported API ID.

jev-latest is a moving alias. Whatever you request, the returned model field records the version that answered. Log that field alongside latency, decisions, and your chosen thresholds. Re-evaluate before changing a production pin.

Outputs and confidence

One output item corresponds to one input item, with pairedItem linking back to its source and binary attachments preserved. Original input JSON lives under input to avoid overwriting either the API's fields or your own fields with the same names.

Illustrative Noul output (numbers are an example, not a recorded benchmark):

{
	"model": "jev-1.13.0",
	"answers": {
		"urgent": { "type": "noul", "noul": 0.9 }
	},
	"usage": { "input_tokens": 350, "output_tokens": 12 },
	"decisions": {

		}
	},
	"latencyMs": 98.25,
	"warnings": [],
	"input": { "ticketId": "SUP-1042", "body": "Please help today." }
}
  • answers preserves the full API answers without renaming their fields: choice, score, or noul, plus any probabilities, confidence, and legend returned by the API.
  • decisions exposes a consistent value field for n8n expressions. Choice and Score retain the API's confidence and probabilities; Score also includes legend.
  • Noul has no separate API confidence. Its normalized confidence is null, not an invented score. Yes/no probabilities are derived as p and 1−p without rounding. A missing threshold means no threshold or decision property.
  • latencyMs measures the SDK call end-to-end, including retry waits, with two decimal places. It is not server-only inference latency or whole-workflow latency.
  • usage preserves token accounting. Output tokens may be reported even though they are free.

First-class confidence routing

Use n8n's If or Switch nodes:

| Goal | Expression | | --------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | Read a department | {{ $json.decisions.department.value }} | | Review uncertain Choice | {{ $json.decisions.department.confidence < 0.8 }} | | Read a frustration score | {{ $json.decisions.frustration.value }} | | Read Noul yes-probability | {{ $json.decisions.urgent.value }} | | Use the configured Noul threshold | {{ $json.decisions.urgent.decision }} | | Review uncertain Noul | {{ $json.decisions.urgent.value > 0.2 && $json.decisions.urgent.value < 0.8 }} | | Get original ticket ID | {{ $json.input.ticketId }} | | Log actual model | {{ $json.model }} |

These are example thresholds, not universal recommendations. Evaluate false positives and false negatives on representative data. A Noul value of 0.05 is strong evidence for no, not “5% confidence.” Keep side effects in deterministic workflow code.

Honest caveat: it can return the wrong valid value. A schema-conforming answer is not guaranteed to be factually correct. Jev's typed decisions reduce parsing problems; they do not eliminate semantic errors. Prompt-injection detection is probabilistic and should complement application authorization and other controls.

Copy-paste workflows

Import a file from examples/ using Import from File, or copy a JSON block below and paste it into an empty n8n canvas. Select your own credentials after import. All workflows start manually and are inactive. Queue endpoints are labeled No Operation nodes that you can replace with helpdesk, Slack, or CRM actions.

A. Email triage: department + urgent

Sample email → Choice department → Noul urgent → confidence gate → route / human review.

This makes two API calls per email, because the dropdown selects one primitive per Jev node. The second node preserves the first result under input. The ready-to-route output flattens the fields needed by downstream actions.

B. Support tickets: sentiment + frustration

Sample ticket → two Score questions in one call → confidence gate → priority / normal queue.

Sentiment uses three levels (0–2), and frustration uses four (0–3). Both retain fractional scores and individual confidence. The example escalates frustration ≥1.5 only after both confidence checks pass.

C. Prompt-injection guard before an LLM

Prompt → Noul “Is this a jailbreak attempt?” → allow / review / block.

  • p <= 0.2: send the original prompt to the Basic LLM Chain.
  • p >= 0.8: block.
  • In between: human review.

Select both a Jev credential and an OpenAI credential on the model node; choose a model available to your OpenAI account. The model node defaults to gpt-5-mini. Only the allow branch reaches the LLM. Jev/API errors stop the workflow; do not configure an error path that bypasses the guard.

Jev vs. a cheap LLM

An explicit cost example for the same single decision task, assuming 1,000 billed input tokens per call and 50 generated output tokens for the LLM. The LLM column uses illustrative cheap-model rates of $0.20/MTok input + $0.80/MTok output; it is not a quote for a named provider or the model in the guard example. Substitute your actual model's current rates.

| | Jev decision | Cheap LLM + JSON parsing | | ----------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | Cost per 1,000 calls | $0.042 at $0.042/MTok input; output is free | $0.24 at the illustrative rates above | | Latency | Vendor reports ~70–500ms; measure this node's latencyMs | Not benchmarked here; depends on provider, generated tokens, reasoning, and region | | Output handling | Typed Choice, Score, or Noul answers | Generate text, parse JSON, validate labels and fields | | Uncertainty | API confidence for Choice/Score; yes-probability for Noul | Self-reported confidence may not be calibrated | | Failure modes | Wrong valid value, ambiguous state, API/network failures | Wrong answer, malformed JSON/schema mismatch with unconstrained generation, truncation/refusal, API/network failures | | Strict structured-output APIs | Decisions are bounded by the question schema | Can mitigate schema errors; still require error handling and semantic evaluation |

Formula: calls × (inputTokens × inputRate + outputTokens × outputRate) / 1,000,000.

Use actual usage.input_tokens: instructions and criteria also consume input tokens. The two-call email example is not one call. This is a token-cost illustration, not a controlled accuracy or latency benchmark. TypeSafe pricing is sourced from its model documentation, checked September 20, 2026; pricing can change.

Errors, retries, and batching

  • The entire input batch is validated before any API calls when execution stops on error. Choice >255, Score outside 2–10, bad thresholds, missing fields, and duplicate labels/keys fail locally with the affected item index.
  • Each valid input item makes one SDK call containing all of its questions. Items run sequentially. Mixed primitives use separate Jev nodes.
  • SDK retries: up to 2 retries on retryable statuses/connection failures, respecting Retry-After. Timeout: 10 seconds per attempt; retry delays increase total elapsed time. Workflow cancellation is forwarded to n8n's HTTP helper.
  • 401: check the API key. 403: check access. 429: reduce the rate or retry later. 5xx: temporary service failure. Timeouts and connection failures get separate actionable errors.
  • Continue on Error preserves the failed item's original JSON under input, returns an error message, and retains item pairing. Successful items continue. Failed outputs have no decisions; handle them explicitly downstream. Cancelling the workflow always stops processing, regardless of this setting.
  • Responses are validated before routing: missing answers, invalid probabilities, out-of-range scores, and Choice labels outside the configured options produce node errors.
  • Requests use Bearer authentication and the SDK's POST https://api.typesafe.ai/v1/systemone call through this.helpers.httpRequest. The SDK builds the payload; the adapter preserves HTTP status and headers for SDK error handling and retries.
  • API keys come only from n8n credentials. SDK body logging is disabled, and API error bodies are not copied into node errors. No .env file is required.

Development

Built on the official @n8n/[email protected] programmatic scaffold.

npm ci
npm run format:check
npm run typecheck
npm run lint
npm run build
npm test
npm run test:package
npm run dev

Use a current npm version (10.8.2+ recommended for the development toolchain). .npmrc enables legacy peer resolution for the official CLI's transitive tooling; package-lock.json pins the tested dependency graph.

npm run dev starts the official development environment. Recent n8n versions use Docker or Podman; for an existing development instance, follow the CLI's --external-n8n instructions. Create a credential in that local instance, import an example, run it, and inspect the outputs. For the guard example, also configure the LLM credential and test both a benign and an adversarial prompt.

TypeScript strict mode is enabled. package.json's separate n8n.strict flag is false to permit the documented non-Cloud lint configuration and SDK dependency. Lint uses the official community preset, with scoped exceptions for the requested SDK dependency, context-free helper errors (wrapped at the node boundary), and an upstream package-discovery bug when the checkout sits directly under a filesystem root. That last exception is inactive in normal nested checkouts/CI; a unit test also checks credential registration.

Tests use mocked HTTP or the mockable requestJev helper—no paid API calls or keys. Workflow tests check question collections through n8n's parameter resolver and verify connection targets. test:package verifies compiled entry points, metadata/icons, and CommonJS SDK transport after a build. These checks do not replace a live n8n UI/API smoke test. PR CI runs lint, build, and tests.

Packaging and release

npm run build
npm pack --dry-run

The package registers dist/nodes/Jev/Jev.node.js and dist/credentials/JevApi.credentials.js. Compiled helpers, icons, codex metadata, examples, README, and license ship with the package. Dependencies are installed by npm rather than embedded in the tarball.

The npm package is n8n-nodes-typesafe-jev. Its source repository is rahulthakore16/n8n-nodes-jev; these names intentionally differ. The npm name n8n-nodes-jev belongs to a separate project.

Pushing a matching version tag triggers .github/workflows/publish.yml. It verifies the version, checks formatting and types, then calls npm run release in GitHub Actions. The official CLI runs lint and build, enables release mode, and publishes with provenance. The prepublishOnly hook runs unit tests and the compiled-package smoke test before publication.
