Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Features

Core Runtime

  • Python-like Builtins: len(), type(), str(), int(), float(), bool(), range()
  • String Utilities: Advanced string manipulation functions
  • Format Specifiers: Complete Python f-string format specifier support
  • Async/Await: Full async/await support with JavaScript interoperability
  • Arrow Functions: Complete async and regular arrow function support
  • Compound Operators: All compound assignment operators with type safety
  • Type System: Runtime type checking and conversion utilities

Format Specifiers

  • Percentage: {value:%}, {value:.2%}
  • Float: {value:.2f}, {value:.6f}
  • Integer: {value:04d}, {value:d}
  • Hex/Binary: {value:x}, {value:X}, {value:b}, {value:o}
  • String Alignment: {value:<10s}, {value:>10s}, {value:^10s}

String Functions

import {
  str_capitalize, str_title, str_reverse, str_count,
  str_pad_left, str_pad_right, str_center,
  format_percentage, format_currency, format_number_with_commas
} from 'nagari-runtime';

// String manipulation
str_capitalize("hello world");  // "Hello world"
str_title("hello world");       // "Hello World"
str_reverse("hello");           // "olleh"

// Formatting utilities
format_percentage(0.1534, 2);   // "15.34%"
format_currency(123.45);        // "$123.45"
format_number_with_commas(1234567); // "1,234,567"

Arrow Functions

import { createAsyncArrow, createArrow, curry, memoize } from 'nagari-runtime';

// Create async arrow functions
const fetchData = createAsyncArrow(async (url) => {
    const response = await fetch(url);
    return response.json();
});

// Create regular arrow functions with error handling
const multiply = createArrow((x, y) => x * y);

// Curry functions
const add = curry((a, b, c) => a + b + c);
const addFive = add(5);
const addFiveAndThree = addFive(3);

// Memoize expensive functions
const expensiveCalculation = memoize((n) => {
    return n * n * n; // Only calculated once per input
});

Compound Assignment Operators

import {
    addAssign,
    subtractAssign,
    multiplyAssign,
    divideAssign,
    CompoundAssignmentOperators
} from 'nagari-runtime';

// Numeric operations
let x = 10;
x = addAssign(x, 5);        // x = 15
x = multiplyAssign(x, 2);   // x = 30
x = divideAssign(x, 3);     // x = 10
x = subtractAssign(x, 2);   // x = 8

// String operations
let str = "Hello";
str = addAssign(str, " World");     // "Hello World"
str = multiplyAssign("Hi", 3);      // "HiHiHi"

// Array operations
let arr = [1, 2];
arr = addAssign(arr, [3, 4]);       // [1, 2, 3, 4]
arr = multiplyAssign([1, 2], 3);    // [1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2]

// Using the class methods
CompoundAssignmentOperators.addAssign(5, 3);  // 8

Async Context Management

import { AsyncContext, createAsyncArrow } from 'nagari-runtime';

const context = AsyncContext.getInstance();

// Create tracked async operations
const asyncOperation = createAsyncArrow(async (data) => {
    // This promise is automatically tracked
    return await processData(data);
}, {
    timeout: 5000,
    retries: 3,
    onError: (error) => console.error('Operation failed:', error)
});

// Wait for all pending operations
await context.waitForAll();
console.log('All operations completed');

Interoperability

  • JavaScript Integration: Seamless conversion between Nagari and JavaScript types
  • React Support: Built-in JSX and React component support
  • Module System: ES6/CommonJS module compatibility
  • Node.js Polyfills: Browser compatibility layer

Installation

npm install nagari-runtime

Usage

Basic Import

import { InteropRegistry, len, str, format_percentage } from 'nagari-runtime';

// Initialize runtime
InteropRegistry.initialize();

// Use Python-like functions
console.log(len([1, 2, 3]));     // 3
console.log(str(true));          // "true"
console.log(format_percentage(0.25)); // "25.00%"

Format Specifiers

The runtime works seamlessly with Nagari's transpiled f-string format specifiers:

# Nagari code
value = 0.1534
print(f"Percentage: {value:.2%}")
print(f"Currency: ${value * 100:.2f}")

Transpiles to:

console.log(`Percentage: ${(value * 100).toFixed(2) + '%'}`);
console.log(`Currency: $${(value * 100).toFixed(2)}`);

Advanced Features

import {
  jsToNagari, nagariToJS,
  center_string, format_scientific
} from 'nagari-runtime';

// Type conversion
const nagariData = jsToNagari({ name: "Alice", age: 30 });
const jsData = nagariToJS(nagariData);

// Advanced formatting
center_string("Hello", 10, "*");  // "**Hello***"
format_scientific(1234.567, 2);  // "1.23e+3"

Compatibility

  • Node.js: >=14.0.0
  • Browsers: ES2018+ (Chrome 63+, Firefox 55+, Safari 12+)
  • TypeScript: Full type definitions included
  • Module Systems: ESM and CommonJS
