Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

newgrad

newgrad.ai in your terminal: search the new-grad job board by meaning, filter on what each posting says about visas, graduating class, degree and experience, save roles, chat with the Agent and run the four-reviewer resume critique.

Search, saves, chat and resumes are part of Pro. Every new account gets a month of Pro free (no card), then it's $5/month. After that a free account can still sign in here: a search shows its top match (and how many more there were), and the profile, plan and feedback commands work.

npm install -g newgrad
newgrad signup # no account yet: create one in the browser
newgrad login # opens your browser to sign in
newgrad login --device # approve a short code at newgrad.ai/device (SSH, no local browser)

Commands

newgrad search "remote ML internship" --limit 5
newgrad search "software engineer" --keyword --location "New York" --type full_time
newgrad search "backend new grad" --open --class 2027 --degree bachelors # open to visa holders
newgrad search "data internship" --visa --no-experience --days 7
newgrad job <slug>
newgrad save <slug> · newgrad unsave <slug> · newgrad saved
newgrad chat "backend roles in NYC that pay well" # or just `newgrad chat` for a session
newgrad resume list
newgrad resume upload ./resume.pdf --job <slug>
newgrad resume review <id>
newgrad resume show <id>
newgrad profile # your target role, location, skills
newgrad profile set --role "Backend engineer" --location "New York" --skills "Go, Postgres"
newgrad ask "Do you list roles in Canada?" # the team answers by email
newgrad feedback "Search found exactly what I wanted"
newgrad feedback --idea "Alerts for new roles at one company"
newgrad feedback # type a longer message, Ctrl-D to send
newgrad plan # what your plan includes, what Pro adds
newgrad upgrade # opens the Stripe checkout step
newgrad whoami · newgrad logout

Add --help to any command to show help without running it. Add --json for JSON output: newgrad chat "Find internships" --json returns { "reply": "…" } after the reply finishes. JSON chat requires a message instead of starting an interactive session. Login prints its sign-in instructions to stderr and its account result to stdout; signup --json returns the sign-up URL without opening a browser.

Interactive chat keeps the latest 20 exchanges, accepts messages up to 8,000 characters, and keeps up to 8,000 characters of each reply as context. Failed turns can be retried without resetting the conversation. Feedback and questions reach a person at newgrad.ai; you can also email [email protected].

MCP

The same capabilities are an MCP server at https://newgrad.ai/api/mcp. Clients sign in through your browser (OAuth), so the config is just the URL:

newgrad mcp # prints configs for Claude Code, Cursor and Claude Desktop
newgrad mcp claude # just the `claude mcp add …` command

Configuration

| | | |---|---| | NEWGRAD_API_URL | API base, default https://newgrad.ai | | BROWSER=none | Print the sign-in URL instead of opening a browser | | ~/.config/newgrad/config.json | Where newgrad login stores credentials (mode 0600) |

Requires Node.js 20 or newer. No runtime dependencies.
