Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Readme

NEXT MW is a package that lets you compose multiple Next.js middlewares together.
Each middleware can have its own configuration (using matchers similar to Next.js) and they are executed in the order you specify.

Features

  • Compose multiple middlewares: Run several middlewares sequentially and stop when one returns a response.
  • Advanced matcher support: Use string, array, or object matchers (with conditions like has and missing) similar to Next.js.
  • Seamless Next.js integration: Works with Next.js middleware system using the same configuration style.
  • TypeScript support: Written in TypeScript with proper type definitions.

Installation

Install via your favorite package manager:

npm install next-mw
# or
yarn add next-mw
# or
pnpm add next-mw

Note: Next.js must be installed in your project (it's listed as a peer dependency).

Usage

Compose Middlewares

Create a file middleware.ts at the root of your Next.js project:

// middleware.ts
import { middlewares } from 'next-mw';

import * as authMiddleware from './middlewares/auth-middleware';
import * as adminMiddleware from './middlewares/admin-middleware';

export const middleware = middlewares(authMiddleware, adminMiddleware);

export const config = {
  matcher: [
    '/((?!api|_next/static|_next/image|favicon.ico|sitemap.xml|robots.txt).*)',
  ],
};

Example Middlewares

Authentication Middleware

// middlewares/auth-middleware.ts
import { NextResponse } from 'next/server';
import type { NextRequest } from 'next/server';

export function middleware(request: NextRequest) {
  const token = request.cookies.get('authToken');
  if (!token) {
    return NextResponse.redirect(new URL('/login', request.url));
  }
  return NextResponse.next();
}

export const config = {
  matcher: ['/dashboard/:path*', '/profile/:path*'],
};

Admin Authorization Middleware with Complex Matcher

// middlewares/admin-middleware.ts
import { NextResponse } from 'next/server';
import type { NextRequest } from 'next/server';

export function middleware(request: NextRequest) {
  const isAdmin = request.cookies.get('isAdmin');
  if (!isAdmin || isAdmin.value !== 'true') {
    return NextResponse.redirect(new URL('/unauthorized', request.url));
  }
  return NextResponse.next();
}

export const config = {
  matcher: [
    {
      source: '/admin/:path*',
      regexp: '^/admin/(.*)$',
      locale: false,
      has: [{ type: 'header', key: 'x-admin-check', value: 'check' }],
      missing: [{ type: 'cookie', key: 'bypassAdmin', value: 'true' }],
    },
    '/admin/:path*',
  ],
};
