Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

nexwall: JavaScript client for the free NexWall wallpaper API

Zero-dependency JavaScript / TypeScript client for NexWall, a free wallpaper API built for wallpaper apps: curated 4K portrait wallpapers (up to 2160×3840) in 50+ categories, plus looping live MP4 wallpapers.

  • Free plan: 100 requests/day, no credit card. Get a free API key
  • Works in Node 18+, Bun, Deno and Cloudflare Workers. TypeScript types included.
npm install nexwall

Try it without a key

import { NexWall } from "nexwall";

const { data } = await new NexWall().demo({ sort: "random", perPage: 5 });
console.log(data.map((w) => w.image_url));

demo() returns up to 10 free wallpapers with no API key (10 requests/minute, 30/day per IP). For pagination and every other method, use a free key.

Usage

import { NexWall } from "nexwall";

const nexwall = new NexWall({ apiKey: process.env.NEXWALL_API_KEY });

const { data: categories } = await nexwall.categories();
const { data: wallpapers } = await nexwall.wallpapers({ categoryId: categories[0].id, sort: "popular", perPage: 20 });
const random = await nexwall.random();

console.log(wallpapers.map((w) => w.image_url), random?.image_url);
console.log(nexwall.rateLimit); // { limit, remaining, reset, plan }

| Method | API endpoint | |---|---| | categories() | GET /categories | | wallpapers({ page, perPage, categoryId, type, search, sort }) | GET /wallpapers | | categoryWallpapers(categoryId, { page, perPage }) | GET /categories/{id}/wallpapers | | wallpaper(id) | GET /wallpapers/{id} | | random({ categoryId, type, search }) | GET /wallpapers?sort=random&per_page=1 |

sort is one of newest, oldest, popular, random. type: "live" requires the Ultra plan.

Errors and rate limits

Failed requests throw NexWallError with status, retryAfter (seconds, on 429) and the response body:

import { NexWall, NexWallError } from "nexwall";

try {
  await nexwall.wallpapers();
} catch (err) {
  if (err instanceof NexWallError && err.status === 429) {
    console.log(`Quota reached, retry in ${err.retryAfter}s`);
  }
}

Keep your key on the server

Don't put your API key in browser or mobile bundles. Call NexWall from your backend, or point the client at your own proxy (no key needed client-side):

const nexwall = new NexWall({ baseUrl: "https://your-app.example/api/nexwall" });

Complete proxy examples for Next.js, Laravel and plain Node are in nexwall-web-starter.

Plans

| Plan | Price | Requests/day | |---|---|---| | Free | $0 | 100 | | Pro | $4.99/mo · ₹399/mo | 10,000 (all categories, commercial use) | | Ultra | $10.99/mo · ₹899/mo | 50,000 (+ live MP4 wallpapers) |
