Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

nist-randomness-beacon

code style: prettier

npm version

This is a wrapper for the NIST Randomness Beacon. The NIST Beacon:

  • publishes 512 bits of high quality randomness every 60 seconds
  • preserves all historical random values and makes them available by timestamp
  • cryptographically signs each record
  • hash-links each record with all previous records in a verifiable chain

VERSION 2.x.x

nist-randomness-beacon version 2+ is meant for use with NIST Randomness Beacon Version 2.0 only.

IMPORTANT

There are many uses for these random values. However, DO NOT use these random values as cryptographic key material! They are public and explicitly not intended for that use. You have been warned!!!

Features

  • Retrieves beacon pulses as Javascript objects
  • Retrieves and caches certificates as needed for validation
  • Validates the response format and signature

Installation

One of:

npm install nist-randomness-beacon --save
yarn add nist-randomness-beacon

Usage Example

Node.js

let beacon = require('nist-randomness-beacon')

// define a sample timestamp to use for pulse retrieval
let timestamp = 1535650993225

beacon
  .getClosestPulseAsync(timestamp)
  .then(res => {
    console.log(res)
  })
  .catch(err => {
    console.error(err)
  })

Browser

This does not currently work in the browser, even if you use a tool like Browserify to package it. The NIST servers do not currently send the necessary CORS headers.

Some additional work would also need to be done to trim down the dependencies of this library for it to be practical in the browser.

Testing

Run the Mocha test suite once.

yarn test

Run the Mocha test suite and continue testing as files change.

yarn watch

Credits

This library is a fork of the nist-beacon project, as of commit abb8d7f18882b207212b1d0a615a7027e4ad537a which was created by Charles Guo. The API changes I had in mind were significant enough to warrant the fork instead of a pull request.

My thanks to Charles for the good starting point. Charles continues to be credited in the license and the code for his work.
