Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

nizel-plugin-print

v0.1.0

Published

Print and PDF block controls for Nizel.

Readme

nizel-plugin-print

Print and PDF layout controls for Nizel Markdown documents.

The plugin renders semantic wrapper elements for page breaks, print-only content, screen-only content, non-printing content, and blocks that should avoid splitting across pages.

Installation

npm install nizel-plugin-print

Usage

import { useNizel } from 'nizel';
import { printPlugin } from 'nizel-plugin-print';
import 'nizel-plugin-print/style.css';

const nizel = useNizel({
  plugins: [printPlugin()],
});

const html = await nizel.html(':::pagebreak\n:::');

The plugin can also inject its default CSS into rendered HTML:

printPlugin({
  injectCss: true,
  collectMetadata: true,
});

Syntax

:::pagebreak
:::

:::pagebreak-before
# New section
:::

:::pagebreak-after
End of section.
:::

:::keep
![Chart](./chart.png)

This chart and caption should stay together.
:::

:::print-only
Printed copy generated on 2026-07-03.
:::

:::screen-only
[Open interactive demo](./demo)
:::

:::no-print
This video is not included in the PDF.
:::

:::print-wide
| Very | Wide | Table |
|---|---|---|
| ... | ... | ... |
:::

Output

:::pagebreak renders an empty structural break:

<div class="nizel-pagebreak" aria-hidden="true"></div>

Other directives wrap their parsed Markdown content:

<div class="nizel-print-only">
  <p>Printed copy generated on 2026-07-03.</p>
</div>

Options

type PrintPluginOptions = {
  injectCss?: boolean;
  collectMetadata?: boolean;
  classPrefix?: string;
};

Defaults:

{
  injectCss: true,
  collectMetadata: true,
  classPrefix: 'nizel'
}

Set injectCss: false when importing nizel-plugin-print/style.css yourself.

Styling

Import the default stylesheet when you want static CSS instead of injected CSS:

import 'nizel-plugin-print/style.css';

The stylesheet only defines print visibility and page-break behavior. It does not set page size, margins, colors, or typography.

Metadata

With collectMetadata: true, render results include print controls:

const result = await nizel(':::pagebreak\n:::\n\n:::keep\nKeep this.\n:::');

console.log(result.meta.print);
{
  controls: [
    { type: 'pagebreak' },
    { type: 'keep' }
  ]
}

If frontmatter includes a print object, supported print settings are copied to result.meta.print.settings:

---
print:
  title: Markdown Plugin Guide
  pageSize: A4
  orientation: portrait
  margins: normal
  showDate: true
  showUrl: true
---

The plugin exposes metadata for renderers and exporters. It does not set page size, margins, colors, or typography.

Parser Exclusions

Print directives are ignored inside fenced code blocks and raw HTML blocks. Escaped directive syntax remains literal Markdown text.

Security

The plugin renders only known print directive names and escapes generated class names. Directive content is parsed by Nizel using the active safe-rendering settings.

Integration Example

const result = await nizel(':::print-only\nPrinted copy.\n:::');

console.log(result.html);
console.log(result.meta.print);
