Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

node-red-contrib-vhv5-barcode-reader

v0.1.7

Published

Node-RED node for reading barcode and metadata JSON from an Omron VHV5 websocket endpoint.

Readme

VHV5 Barcode Reader

Node-RED package with one VHV5 websocket reader node that emits two JSON outputs.

Patch Notes

0.1.7

  • Fixed VHV5 websocket frame handling so MessagePack payloads are decoded correctly even when the websocket message is delivered as a buffer with an incorrect text/binary flag.
  • Fixed barcode extraction to prefer live VHV5 result fields such as outDataUTF8 and dataUTF8 instead of returning Base64 payload content.
  • Fixed symbology extraction to use the actual result type from the decoded VHV5 read event.
  • Added a regression test covering the live-style VHV5 ReaderReport payload shape.

Behavior

  • requires user input into Barcode readers IP address
  • Connects to Websocket of barcode reader
  • extracts metadata and transforms into JSON formatting
  • Extracts barcode-like fields from decoded VHV5 events.
  • Reconnects automatically after disconnects.

Outputs

Output 1 sends one message per successful read:

{
  "topic": "vhv5/barcode",
  "payload": {
    "barcode": "0041199006794",
    "symbology": "EAN13",

    "host": "192.168.250.55",
    "port": 9003
  }
}

Output 2 sends one message per successful read:

  "topic": "vhv5/barcode/metadata",
  "payload": {
    "barcode": "0041199006794",
    "symbology": "EAN13",
    "image_key": "123456",
    "result_count": 1,
    "received_at": "2026-07-06T18:00:00.000Z",
    "frame_format": "msgpack",
    "decoded_type": "object",
    "source": {
      "host": "192.168.250.55",
      "port": 9003,
      "websocket_url": "ws://192.168.250.55:9003"
    },
    "event": {}
  }
}
