Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Readme

⬆️ NxtUpdate

Universal package updater for macOS — auto-detects and updates everything from one command.

npm version License: MIT Requires Bun

NxtUpdate detects every package manager installed on your Mac and updates them all in one go — with an interactive TUI or simple CLI commands.

Features

  • Interactive TUI — full terminal UI to browse, select, and update packages
  • Auto-detection — finds every package manager you have installed automatically
  • Selective updates — choose which managers or packages to update
  • Dry-run mode — preview what would change before touching anything
  • Uninstall support — remove packages from any manager via the TUI
  • macOS system updates — includes softwareupdate (with sudo support)
  • Zero config — just run nxtupdate

Supported Package Managers

| Manager | Icon | Command | Notes | |---|---|---|---| | Homebrew | 🍺 | brew | Formulae + Casks | | Node.js | 📦 | npm / pnpm / yarn / bun | Auto-selects active PM | | Python | 🐍 | pip3 / pip | Skips virtualenvs | | Rust / Cargo | 🦀 | cargo | Requires cargo-install-update | | macOS System | 🍎 | softwareupdate | Runs with sudo |

Requirements

  • macOS (this tool is macOS-only)
  • Bun ≥ 1.0.0 — used as the runtime

Install Bun if you don't have it:

curl -fsSL https://bun.sh/install | bash

Installation

# Via npm (global)
npm install -g nxtupdate

# Via bun (global)
bun add -g nxtupdate

Usage

Interactive TUI (default)

nxtupdate

Launches a full-screen terminal UI. Use arrow keys to navigate, Enter to confirm, Ctrl+C to quit.

TUI screens:

  • Scan — detects managers and checks for outdated packages
  • Main Menu — choose to update, list packages, or uninstall
  • Select Packages — pick exactly which packages to update or remove
  • Update — live progress for each manager

CLI Commands

# Detect all installed package managers
nxtupdate scan

# List outdated packages across all managers
nxtupdate list

# Update everything
nxtupdate update

# Update only one manager
nxtupdate update --only homebrew
nxtupdate update --only npm

# Launch TUI explicitly
nxtupdate tui

Options

| Flag | Description | |---|---| | --only <manager> | Target a specific package manager | | -d, --dry-run | Show what would be updated, make no changes | | --no-sudo | Skip updates that require sudo (macOS system) | | -v, --verbose | Show package names during update | | -y, --yes | Skip all confirmation prompts |

Rust / Cargo Notes

Cargo does not natively support listing outdated packages. NxtUpdate uses cargo-install-update for this. Install it once:

cargo install cargo-install-update
