Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Interactive CLI to generate project-specific .gitignore files

Readme

ojhel

Interactive CLI to generate project-specific .gitignore files with zero configuration.

Features

  • 5 Project Types: Vite React, Next.js, Express, Fastify, Vanilla JS
  • Language Support: TypeScript and JavaScript
  • Interactive Prompts: Simple, guided setup
  • Smart File Handling: Append to or override existing .gitignore
  • Next.js Support: Automatically creates next-env.d.ts
  • Zero Config: Works out of the box

Installation & Usage

Quick Start (Recommended)

# We Can use a npx/bunx
pnx ojhel

Install Globally

pnpm add -g ojhel
ojhel

How It Works

  1. Select your project type
  2. Choose your language (TypeScript or JavaScript)
  3. Decide what to do if .gitignore already exists
  4. Generated files appear in your project root

Supported Project Types

| Project Type | Description | |-------------|-------------| | Vite React | Modern React with Vite bundler | | Next.js | React framework with server-side rendering | | Express | Minimal Node.js web framework | | Fastify | High-performance Node.js framework | | Vanilla JS | Minimal JavaScript project |

What Gets Generated

All Project Types

  • .gitignore with project-specific patterns

Next.js Only

  • next-env.d.ts (TypeScript environment types)

.gitignore Patterns

Vite React

  • Node modules, dependencies, lock files
  • Vite build output (dist/, dist-ssr/, *.local)
  • IDE configs, OS files
  • Logs and environment variables
  • TypeScript build info (if selected)

Next.js

  • Next.js specific (.next/, out/, *.pem)
  • Prisma client
  • Test coverage
  • Environment, IDE, OS, and log files
  • TypeScript patterns (if selected)

Express / Fastify

  • All Node.js patterns (logs, dependencies, build)
  • Runtime data (pids, seeds)
  • Coverage reports
  • Cache files
  • TypeScript patterns (if selected)

Vanilla JS

  • Minimal setup: node_modules/, .env, dist/
  • IDE, OS, and log files

Handling Existing .gitignore

If .gitignore already exists, ojhel offers two options:

  1. Append - Adds new patterns to the end of existing file
  2. Override - Replaces the entire file with generated patterns

Environment Variables

No configuration needed. ojhel works with sensible defaults:

  • .env files are always ignored
  • Package manager lock files (pnpm-lock.yaml, package-lock.json) are ignored
  • IDE directories (.vscode/, .idea/) are ignored

TypeScript Support

When you select TypeScript, additional patterns are added:

  • *.tsbuildinfo - TypeScript build cache
  • Build output directories

Publishing to npm

This package is published to npm as ojhel. Users can run it immediately without installation:

pnpm dlx ojhel
