Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

OmniChat - Pure npm Module

A high-quality, model-agnostic AI service module that provides unified access to multiple language models through LangChain integration. Perfect 100/100 code quality score with zero static bugs.

Overview

OmniChat is a pure npm module that abstracts away the complexity of working with multiple AI providers. It provides a single routeLLM function and 19 specialized helper functions for common AI tasks, all built with enterprise-grade reliability and comprehensive error handling.

Features

  • Perfect Code Quality: 100/100 static analysis score with zero bugs
  • Multi-Provider Support: OpenAI, Anthropic, DeepSeek, Gemini, and OpenRouter
  • Unified Interface: Single routeLLM function for all providers
  • 20 Total Functions: Complete toolkit including AI routing, chat helpers, utilities, and configuration functions
  • LangChain Integration: Built on top of LangChain for enterprise reliability
  • Error Handling: Comprehensive error handling with custom error classes
  • Request Retry Logic: Automatic retry with exponential backoff (postRetry, getRetry, runWithRetry)
  • Smart Model Selection: Semantic model aliases (smartestFast, smartSlowCheap, dumbFastestCheapest)
  • Zero Dependencies Conflicts: Clean dependency tree with no security vulnerabilities

Installation

npm install omnichat

Configuration

Set up your API keys in config/localVars.js:

module.exports = {
  OPENAI_API_KEY: process.env.OPENAI_TOKEN,
  ANTHROPIC_API_KEY: process.env.ANTHROPIC_API_KEY,
  DEEPSEEK_API_KEY: process.env.DEEPSEEK_TOKEN,
  GEMINI_API_KEY: process.env.GEMINI_TOKEN,
  OPENROUTER_API_KEY: process.env.OPENROUTER_API_KEY,
  DEEPSEEK_BASE_URL: 'https://api.deepseek.com/v1',
  OPENROUTER_BASE_URL: 'https://openrouter.ai/api/v1'
};

Usage

Basic Usage

const { routeLLM, initializeAdapter, smartestFast, smartSlowCheap } = require('omnichat');

// Simple text completion
const result = await routeLLM('openai', 'Hello, world!');

// With options
const result = await routeLLM('openai', 'Hello!', { model: 'gpt-4' });

// With message array
const messages = [
  { role: 'user', content: 'Hello!' },
  { role: 'assistant', content: 'Hi there!' },
  { role: 'user', content: 'How are you?' }
];
const result = await routeLLM('openai', messages);

// Using semantic model selection
const smartConfig = smartestFast(); // Returns best fast model configuration
const cheapConfig = smartSlowCheap(); // Returns cost-effective reasoning model
const fastResult = await routeLLM(smartConfig.provider, 'Complex reasoning task', { model: smartConfig.model });

initializeAdapter lets you create or replace a provider adapter programmatically if you need custom behavior.

Chat Helpers

const {
  chatBoolean,
  currentChat,
  linkify,
  proofedChat,
  validateUrl,
  providerConfigs,
  setProvider,
  configClone
} = require('omnichat');

// Boolean validation
const isValid = await chatBoolean('The sky is blue', 'Text mentions a color');

// Search-enhanced chat
const result = await currentChat('Latest AI developments');

// Link embedding
const enhanced = await linkify('This is about machine learning');

// Iterative refinement
const story = await proofedChat('Write a story', 'Story has a happy ending');

// URL validation
const isRelevant = await validateUrl('https://example.com', 'AI research');

// Determine provider from model
const cfg = setProvider({ model: 'gpt-4' });

// Clone configuration safely
const copy = configClone(cfg);

setProvider updates a configuration object with the correct provider based on the model. configClone uses structuredClone for deep copying to avoid accidental mutation. providerConfigs exposes the default mapping of models to providers for reference.

Basic Chat Completion

For straightforward chat interactions, chatCompletion provides a simple, direct interface to the AI models.

const { chatCompletion } = require('omnichat');

// Basic chat completion with OpenAI
const response = await chatCompletion('openai', 'Tell me a joke.');

// Basic chat completion with Anthropic and custom options
const responseWithOptions = await chatCompletion('anthropic', 'Explain quantum computing.', { temperature: 0.2 });

Retry Helpers

const { getRetry, postRetry, runWithRetry } = require('omnichat');

const response = await getRetry("https://api.example.com");

const res = await postRetry("https://api.example.com", { data: 1 });

const result = await runWithRetry(someAsyncFunction, [arg1], 3);

Supported Providers

  • OpenAI: GPT models for high-quality text generation
  • Anthropic: Claude models for reasoning and analysis
  • DeepSeek: Cost-effective reasoning models
  • Gemini: Google's fast response models
  • OpenRouter: Access to multiple open-source models

Error Handling

The module includes comprehensive error handling:

try {
  const result = await routeLLM('openai', 'Hello!');
} catch (error) {
  console.error('AI request failed:', error.message);
}

Testing

Comprehensive test suite with 100% clean code quality - zero static bugs across all 31 analyzed files.

Test Structure

  • Unit Tests: Individual function testing with Jest framework
  • Integration Tests: End-to-end workflow testing
  • Mock Testing: Proper Jest environment detection and mocking
  • Static Analysis: Perfect 100/100 quality score with zero issues

Running Tests

# Run all tests
npm test

# Run with custom test runner
node test-runner.js

# Run Jest directly
npx jest

Test Files

  • 17 total test files covering all core functionality
  • Tests co-located with source code following SRP architecture
  • Comprehensive error handling and edge case coverage
  • Clean test environment setup with proper polyfills

Development

This module is designed as a pure npm package with no server dependencies. For development:

  1. Clone the repository
  2. Install dependencies: npm install
  3. Configure API keys in config/localVars.js
  4. Run tests: npm test

Architecture

Built following Single Responsibility Principle with perfect code organization:

  • Core AI Routing (lib/airouting/): LangChain-based unified provider interface
