Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

parcel-transformer-dot

Transforms doT files to template functions

Compatible only with Parcel 2, and uses the latest 2.0 beta release of doT.js

Install

npm install parcel-transformer-dot
yarn add parcel-transformer-dot

In your .parcelrc add:

"transformers": {
  "*.dot": ["parcel-transformer-dot"]
}

Usage

Optionally, add the following config to your package.json file, the defaults are shown below:

{
    "parcel-transformer-dot": {
        "argName": "it",
        "strip": "true",
        "selfContained": "false",
        // "defsDir": undefined
    }
}

Import your doT template:

<!-- template.dot -->
<div class="content">
    {{= message }}
</div>
// index.js
import templateFunction from './template.dot'
const data = { message: "hello world" }
document.body.innerHTML = templateFunction( data );

doT Usage

Interpolation

<div>Hi {{=it.name}}!</div>
<div>{{=it.age || ''}}</div>

Evaluation

You can just write valid Javascript.. no need for anything as unwieldy and bloated as the Handlebars Helpers!

{{ for(var prop in it) { }}
<div>{{=prop}}</div>
{{ } }}

Partials

See below for re-useable partials

{{##def.snippet:
<div>{{=it.name}}</div>{{#def.joke}}
#}}

{{#def.snippet}}

Conditionals

Can stack as many "if-else's" as you need

{{? it.name }}
<div>Oh, I love your name, {{=it.name}}!</div>
{{?? it.age === 0}}
<div>Guess nobody named you yet!</div>
{{??}}
You are {{=it.age}} and still don't have a name?
{{?}}

Array and Object Iteration

{{~object:value:key}}
<div data-key="{{=key}}">{{=value}}</div>
{{~}}

{{~array:value:index}}
<div data-index="{{=index}}">{{=value}}</div>
{{~}}

Inline Files

There is a built in compile time helper to read and embed other text files into your template.

{{#def.loadfile("./src/assets/yourfile.svg") }}

Partials + #def

Make sure to specify in the package.json file:

"parcel-transformer-dot": {
    "defsDir": "src/templates/defs/"
}

defsDir

A relative path (local to your package.json file) specifying a directory of .dot files. Each file must specify only one doT partial. The name of the file is for your organization only. The partial should be defined as follows:

{{##def.my_partial:my_parameter:
    <div class="thing"> Partial: {{= my_paramter }} </div>
#}}

Then, in any of your standard templates, you may access these re-useable partials. Partials are only prepended to the templates that make use them.

{{#def.my_partial:it.that_parameter}}
