Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

pi-sidekicks

v0.1.1

Published

Minimal background subagents for pi: fresh context, results delivered as messages, tiny tool schemas.

Readme

pi-sidekicks

Minimal background subagents for pi.

  • Background only. Spawning returns an id immediately; the result arrives later as a message that wakes the parent.
  • Fresh context. A subagent sees only its task text, plus the usual project context files, skills and extensions.
  • No roles, no workflows. One generic agent. Pick a model per task if you want.
  • Tiny footprint. Four tools with one-sentence descriptions.
  • In-process. Each subagent is an SDK session inside the running pi process. No tmux, no subprocesses.

Install

pi install npm:pi-sidekicks

Or try it without installing:

pi -e npm:pi-sidekicks

Tools

| Tool | Purpose | |---|---| | subagent({ task, model?, thinking? }) | Start a background agent; returns an id | | subagent_message({ id, message }) | Steer a running agent or continue a finished one | | subagent_stop({ id }) | Stop an agent | | subagent_list() | List agents with status, tokens, cost and time |

model accepts provider/id or a fuzzy id (haiku, gpt-5); it defaults to the parent's current model. thinking defaults to the parent's level.

UI

  • A compact widget above the editor shows one line per active or recently finished agent: status, current tool, tokens, cost, elapsed time, task.
  • /subagents lists all agents and lets you view the live transcript, send a message, or stop one.
  • Result messages render collapsed (first lines); expand them to see the full output.

Behavior

  • Up to 10 agents run at once; extra spawns queue. Override with PI_SIDEKICKS_CONCURRENCY.
  • Subagents cannot spawn subagents.
  • Stopping via the tool is silent; stopping from /subagents posts a non-triggering result message with any partial output.
  • The last 8 finished sessions stay alive for continuation; older ones are released.
  • Subagents share your working directory and permissions. Nothing is sandboxed.

Development

npm install
npm run typecheck
node scripts/smoke.ts /tmp/some-dir # end-to-end: parent spawns, result is delivered
node scripts/lifecycle.ts /tmp/some-dir # queueing, stop, continue

Releasing

Releases are published from GitHub Actions with npm trusted publishing (OIDC, no token) and provenance.

npm version patch # bumps package.json, commits, tags vX.Y.Z
git push --follow-tags # the Release workflow publishes to npm and creates a GitHub release
