Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

picopix

v0.1.2

Published

Tiny, typed, tree-shakeable image processing for the browser and Node.

Readme

picopix

Small, typed, tree-shakeable image processing for the browser and Node.

  • Resize, crop, rotate, filter, sharpen and composite pure RawImage pixels.
  • Compress to a byte budget, convert formats, build srcset variants and ThumbHash placeholders.
  • Fix EXIF orientation and strip metadata losslessly.
  • Offload work to a Web Worker or a worker pool, with cancellation.
  • Plug in your own ML background removal or upscaling.

picopix demo: an image is resized, compressed and given srcset variants and a ThumbHash placeholder in a Web Worker

Install

npm i picopix

Optional: @napi-rs/canvas for Node, and @imgly/background-removal or @huggingface/transformers for the ML providers.

Quick start

import { processImage } from 'picopix';

const blob = await processImage(file)
  .resize({ width: 1600, fit: 'inside' })
  .sharpen(0.5)
  .toFormat('webp', { quality: 0.82 })
  .toBlob();

Input can be a Blob, ArrayBuffer, typed array, URL or decoded RawImage. EXIF orientation is applied automatically.

Helpers

import {
  compressImage, generateSrcSet, generatePlaceholder,
  generateThumbnail, stripMetadata, getImageInfo,
} from 'picopix';

await compressImage(file, { maxSizeKB: 150 });             // fits the budget
await generateThumbnail(file, 160);                         // 160x160 cover crop
await generateSrcSet(file, { widths: [480, 960, 1920] });   // [{ width, blob, descriptor }]
await generatePlaceholder(file);                            // { base64, dataURL, width, height }
await stripMetadata(file);                                  // lossless, JPEG/PNG
await getImageInfo(file); // size, format, EXIF; no decode

Web Worker

import { createImageWorker, processImage } from 'picopix';

const worker = createImageWorker();
const blob = await processImage(file, { worker }).resize({ width: 1600 }).toBlob();

Vite needs optimizeDeps: { exclude: ['picopix'] }; see workers.

Node

import { processImage, useNodeBackend } from 'picopix/node';

await useNodeBackend(); // requires @napi-rs/canvas

Entry points

| Import | Contents | min+gzip | | --- | --- | --- | | picopix | Pipeline, helpers, codecs, metadata, worker client | 22.9 KB | | picopix/pixels | Pure pixel functions, no canvas | 10.2 KB | | picopix/node | Everything, plus the Node backend | 23.8 KB | | picopix/worker | Module worker script | 11.4 KB |

Bundlers drop what you don't import. WebP and AVIF output depend on the browser; check with await canEncode('avif').
