Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

playspec

v0.1.0

Published

Draw a level on paper, describe the game and its rules, and your coding agent builds a 2D game you can share.

Readme

playspec gives your coding agent what it needs to build real 2D games in the Godot engine, and to prove they work. You bring a sketch and the rules. The agent builds the game, playspec checks every step, and you play it as it grows.

What you get

  • Any 2D game you can describe. Platformers, top-down adventures, puzzles, card games. Your rules, in your words: "collect every coin to open the exit".
  • Levels proved finishable. playspec plays each level in the engine and records a winning run. Change a level and you know in seconds whether it can still be finished.
  • Feel that is measured. Ask for a jump four tiles high, and the engine jumps and measures it.
  • Your sketch, read back first. "These circles are coins? This triangle is a spike?" Nothing is built until you say yes.
  • Playable at every step. Each stage ends with something to play and one question for you.
  • Ready for any screen. One command builds it for the web. It plays in any browser and on phones and tablets, with touch controls, and installs to the home screen like an app.

Install

You need Node 22+, Godot 4.3+ and a coding agent: Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot, or any other that reads agent skills.

npm i -g playspec
playspec setup

setup gives your agent the playspec skill and checks that it can find Godot. If Godot is not on your PATH, set PLAYSPEC_GODOT to it. For any other agent, point it at ~/.agents/skills/make-a-game/SKILL.md.

Update with npm update -g playspec.

Make a game

Open your agent in an empty folder and ask:

Make me a platformer. Here's a sketch of the first level: level-1.jpg. Collect every coin to open the exit.

It asks a few questions, shows you what it read from the sketch, then builds the game stage by stage, stopping for you to play.

Share it

playspec doctor --install-templates # once per machine: Godot's web templates
playspec export web # the game in build/web, and a zip of it
playspec serve # play it in your browser

Put build/web on any web host, like itch.io, Netlify, GitHub Pages or your own site, and send the link.

playspec --help lists every command, if you want to drive it yourself.
