Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

present-md

Write slides in Markdown, run locally, present clean - built for engineers who hate slide tools.

Slide showing a code-heavy presentation with syntax highlighting

Install globally

npm install -g present-md

Then use present-md directly without npx.

Usage

npx present-md slides.md             # serve on :7890, auto-open browser
npx present-md slides.md -p 3000    # custom port
npx present-md slides.md --no-open  # serve only, print URL
npx present-md slides.md --fullscreen # prompt to enter fullscreen on load
npx present-md slides.md --pdf # export to PDF

Writing slides

Each slide is a block of Markdown separated by --- on its own line:

# First slide

Some content here.

---

## Second slide

More content.

---

# Thank you

The first # heading in the file is used as the browser tab title.

Text and formatting

Standard Markdown works everywhere — headings, bold, italic, inline code, blockquotes, tables, and lists:

## My slide

> "Good programmers write code that humans can understand." — *Martin Fowler*

- Point one with **bold** and `inline code`
- Point two with *italic*

| Column A | Column B |
|----------|----------|
| foo      | bar      |

Code blocks

Fenced code blocks get full syntax highlighting:

```typescript
function parseSlides(markdown: string): Slide[] {
  return markdown
    .split(/\n---\n/)
    .filter(Boolean)
    .map(raw => processSlide(raw));
}
```

Image placement

Images are positioned using the title attribute (the quoted string after the URL):

![alt](image.png "right") # image on right half, content on left
![alt](image.png "left") # image on left half, content on right
![alt](image.png "bg") # fullscreen background behind content
![alt](image.png "right opacity:0.8")  # combine position with opacity (0.0–1.0)
![alt](image.png)                      # inline, default flow

| Directive | Effect | | ------------ | ----------------------------- | | right | Image fills the right half | | left | Image fills the left half | | bg | Fullscreen background | | opacity:N | Transparency, 0.0 – 1.0 |

bg works well for title slides and section dividers — the text sits on top with full readability.

Keyboard shortcuts

| Key | Action | | --------------- | ------------------- | | / Space | Next slide | | | Previous slide | | O | Overview grid | | F | Toggle fullscreen | | Home / End | First / last slide |
