Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Byte-exact Promptpile Conversation prefix snapshot tool

Readme

promptpile-fork

promptpile-fork creates an independent physical snapshot of a selected prefix of one Promptpile Conversation directory. It does not call a model, parse message bodies, copy archive history, or materialize layered Conversations.

promptpile-fork \
  --source ./messages \
  --target ./branches/experiment-a \
  --through-index 12

The cutoff is inclusive. Every direct regular Conversation Protocol artifact whose numeric index is less than or equal to the cutoff is copied with its exact basename and raw bytes. This includes recognized malformed JSON/JSONL artifacts, which Fork copies without repair. Nested files, symlinks, locks, temporary files, archive data, and other non-protocol entries are ignored.

The source is read-only and may continue growing above the cutoff without invalidating the fork. A change inside the selected prefix aborts publication. The target parent must already exist and the target itself must not exist; overwrite, merge, hardlink, archive, idx rewrite, and layered modes are deliberately not supported.

CLI

--source <dir> required source physical Conversation directory
--target <dir> required new target directory
--through-index <n> required inclusive non-negative safe-integer cutoff
--dry-run validate, observe, and report without filesystem mutation
--format text|json output format; default text

JSON reports use sourcePrefixFingerprint, which fingerprints only the selected prefix. A dry-run report has status: "planned"; a published fork has status: "completed". JSON failures have status: "failed" and a stable machine-readable code.

Publication boundary

Artifacts are copied into a private staging directory beside the target, rescanned and verified as an exact entry set, and the selected source prefix is observed again. Publication consists of one same-parent directory rename. Before that rename the final target is absent; after it the target is complete.

A caught failure performs best-effort cleanup without replacing the primary error. A process crash may leave .promptpile-fork.staging.* or .promptpile-fork.claim.* entries. Version 1 intentionally does not reclaim stale entries automatically. Failure to release a claim after successful publication is a warning and does not turn a completed fork into a failure.

The normative contract is doc/15-contracts/conversation-fork-v1.md. Maintainer-facing ownership is documented in doc/20-packages/promptpile-fork.md.
