Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

A fuzz tester for gRPC and proto3

Currently, the functionality is spread around a little:

  • randomProtoMessage.js: A function to produce purely random messages
  • mutateProtoMessage.js: Deterministic mutations of an existing message

Either should produce a valid object within your protobuf message definition.

  • runner.js: Sends all the deterministic mutations at a running gRPC service until it crashes

Examples

Mutation strategy

If you come up with too much random data, you probably won't get very deep into your service. The deterministic mutators will do either one or two subtle (or unsubtle) changes to your input. The idea is that you will get past the obvious error checks and penetrate deeper into the code.
