Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

⚡ Atlas Pulse

Instant, Zero-Overhead Infrastructure & App Observability
The Datadog & New Relic Killer — 100% Free, Zero-Telemetry, Self-Hosted.

npm version License: MIT Platform

🏛️ Vision

Commercial observability stacks (Datadog, New Relic, Dynatrace) have become outrageously expensive, bloated, and closed. Simple host monitoring shouldn't cost thousands of dollars per month or consume 500MB of host RAM just to collect metrics.

Pulse is engineered from first principles by Atlas Research Labs:

  • 🆓 100% Free & Open Source — No paywalls, no agent license fees, no credit cards.
  • ⚡ Zero-Overhead — < 15MB RAM footprint, < 0.2% CPU overhead. Zero external dependencies.
  • 🖥️ Dual Interfaces — Interactive live Terminal UI (pulse top) + Gorgeous Embedded Web Dashboard (pulse dashboard).
  • 📡 Synthetic Probes — Microsecond-level DNS, TCP, TLS, and TTFB latency benchmarking.
  • 🚨 Instant Webhook Alerts — Native dispatch to Discord, Slack, and custom HTTP webhooks.
  • 🌍 Cross-Platform — Seamless out of the box on Linux, macOS, and Windows.

🚀 Quick Start

Run instantly without installation:

npx pulseio

Or install globally:

npm install -g pulseio

💻 CLI Commands

1. Interactive Terminal Monitor (pulse top / pulse monit)

Launches a high-refresh ANSI terminal UI displaying real-time gauges for CPU (per core), memory, disk mount points, network throughput, and top processes:

pulse top

2. Embedded Visual Web Dashboard (pulse dashboard)

Spins up a lightweight, responsive, real-time web dashboard powered by Server-Sent Events (SSE) and SVG charts:

pulse dashboard
# Web UI running at http://localhost:9988

Custom port and host:

pulse dashboard --port 8080 --host 0.0.0.0

3. Instant Health Check (pulse check)

Evaluates system bottlenecks and alerts in one shot:

pulse check

Or export as structured JSON for automation & CI/CD:

pulse check --json

4. Synthetic Endpoint Prober (pulse probe)

Benchmarks any external or internal web service with granular network breakdown:

pulse probe https://google.com

Output:

✓ PROBE SUCCESS [301 Moved Permanently]
  DNS Lookup: 12 ms
  TCP Connect: 28 ms
  TLS Handshake: 45 ms
Time To 1st Byte: 94 ms
  Total Latency: 96 ms
  Payload Size: 220 bytes

🌐 REST & SSE Streaming API

When running pulse dashboard, the embedded HTTP server exposes programmatic observability endpoints:

| Endpoint | Method | Description | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | /api/metrics | GET | Complete instantaneous snapshot (CPU, RAM, Disks, Network, Processes, History) | | /api/health | GET | Concise status payload (healthy or degraded) with active alerts | | /api/processes?limit=25 | GET | Active process tree sorted by resident memory | | /api/probe?url=<target> | GET | On-demand synthetic network probe against target URL | | /api/stream | GET | Live Server-Sent Events (SSE) push stream (1 update/sec) |

🚨 Alerts & Webhooks

Configure threshold alerts and forward them automatically to your Discord or Slack channels:

pulse dashboard --webhook "https://discord.com/api/webhooks/YOUR/WEBHOOK/URL"

Or set via environment variable:

export PULSE_WEBHOOK_URL="https://hooks.slack.com/services/YOUR/TOKEN"
pulse top

Thresholds:

  • CPU: Triggers when overall CPU usage $\ge 90%$
  • Memory: Triggers when memory utilization $\ge 90%$
  • Disks: Triggers when any disk mount point $\ge 90%$ full
