Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

react-cache-fetch

v1.3.0

Published

React hook that caches fetch calls so that repeat calls always return the same data

Readme

react_cache_fetch

React library to cache data using fetch

Installation

npm i react-cache-fetch

Usage

In this example a counter is used to change the url being called. Each call therefore returns unique data. If reset is called the counter is reset and cached data will be returned as the url will now match a previously called url.

import { useFetch } from "../component/useFetch"
import React, { useState } from 'react';

const UseFetchExample = () => {
    const [click, setclick] = useState(1);

    const { status, data, error, refetch, url } = useFetch(`http://localhost/test/?id=${click}`)
    return <div data-testid="usefetchdata">
        <h1>Example</h1>
        {data && data.counter && <span>Count: {data.counter} </span>}
        <div>
            {data && JSON.stringify(data)}
        </div>
        <div>
            Clicks: {click}
        </div>
        <div>
            {status}
        </div>
        <div>
            {url}
        </div>
        <div>
            {error}
        </div>
        <div>
            <button data-testid="click" onClick={() => {setclick(c => c+1)}}>Fetch</button>
            <button data-testid="reset" onClick={() => {setclick(1)}}>Reset</button>
            <button data-testid="refetch" onClick={() => {refetch()}}>Refetch</button>
        </div>
    </div>
}

export default UseFetchExample;

Inputs

const { status, data, error, refetch, url } = useFetch(`http://localhost/test/?id=${click}`)

useFetch takes a single required parameter, a url. Everytime this url is accessed using useFetch the same result will be returned.

useFetch may also recieve a second optional parameter that controls cache options (currently only cache invalidation supported) useFetch has a third optional parameter that can replace the standard windows.fetch with a customized fetch component (for example a secure fetch that adds required headers before the fetch call is executed).

use Fetch returns

  • status - the current status of the fetch request (idle, fetching, fetched, error)
  • error - has a value if an error is found during the http call, contains the error message
  • data - the data returned from the http call
  • refetch - if the data was previously cached, refetch will force a refetch of the data instead of returning the cached value
  • url - returns the current url that useFetch is using

Cache Invalidation

When using useFetch the options object can be used to set an invalidation timeout

{
    "mode":"time",
    "period": 1000
}

period is the number of milliseconds before a url will be refetched
