Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

react-dnd-canvas

This repo provides a wrapper for the react-dnd package. By importing the Canvas component, one can register any node, so that they may be dragged and dropped within the Canvas.

Setup

App entry

This package is dependent on react-redux. In order to utiltize the Canvas, the component must be wrapped in a react-redux Provider.

import React from 'react';
import ReactDOM from 'react-dom';
import { Provider } from 'react-redux';

import { Canvas } from './Canvas';
import store from './store';

ReactDOM.render(
    <Provider store={store}>
        <Canvas/>
    </Provider>,
    document.getElementById('root')
);

Registering Components

In order to add a component to the Canvas, employ the component registry by importing the useRegistry React Hook.

Import Test from './Test';

const App = () => {
    const [registry, register] = useRegistry();
    !registry?.['TEST'] && register(Test, 'TEST');

    return ...
};

Once the component is active within the registry the type value you have assigned can be used to access the component in the registry. The register function can also be used to pass props, which will be applied to the component at render time. However, passing props is not required.

const App = () => {
    const [registry, register] = useRegistry();
    !registry?.['BLUESQUARE'] && register('BLUESQUARE', Square, { color: 'blue' })

    return ...
};

Adding Components

In conjunction with the component registry, state is also managed within the redux store. After registering a component, there needs to be a way to add a component into the redux store within your App. To add components to the store utilize the addComponent redux action. (Note: this action will need to be dispatched using react-redux)

const Form = () => {

    const onClick = () => {
        addComponent(100, 100, 'TEST');
    }

    return <div>
        <button onClick={onClick}>
            Enter
        </button>
    </div>;
};

The above will add the Test component into the redux store. The Canvas can then match the components in the redux store to those registered in the registry.

Creating the store

In order to use the redux reducer provided by this package, use the combineReducers function exported from redux.

import { combineReducers, compose, createStore } from 'redux';
import { CanvasReducer } from 'react-dnd-canvas';

const composeEnhancers = window.__REDUX_DEVTOOLS_EXTENSION_COMPOSE__ || compose;

export default createStore(combineReducers({CanvasReducer}), composeEnhancers());

Note: The CanvasReducer must be referred to as CanvasReducer in the new store or the Canvas element will not be able to retrieve the components correctly.
