Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

react-markdown-blog Publish to npm

react-markdown-blog is a React component library for hosting a blog with posts written in Markdown. It supports blog content served via CDN or locally (mock), and renders posts with full Markdown and code highlighting support.

Content Structure

When using a CDN to serve your blog content, your storage should have the following structure:

250101/content.md
250202/content.md
manifest.json
  • Each folder (e.g. 250101) represents a post, where the name is the date in YYMMDD format.
  • Each folder contains a content.md file with the Markdown content.
  • manifest.json contains a list of all post entries in one of two formats:

Enhanced Format

An array of objects with folder and tags:

[
  {"folder": "250101", "tags": ["react", "typescript"]},
  {"folder": "250202", "tags": ["css", "design"]}
]

The enhanced format allows for tag-based filtering of posts in the UI.

Usage

You must wrap the blog in a react-router-dom router. Here is a sample usage from src/App.tsx:

  • CDN - renders the blog provided by url.
    <BrowserRouter>
      <Routes>
        ...
        <Route path="/blog/*" element={<Blog serviceType={{ source: 'cdn', url: '{your_cdn_url}' } as ServiceType} footerName="Sample Blog" />} />
      </Routes>
    </BrowserRouter>
  • Mock - for testing only.
    <BrowserRouter>
      <Routes>
        ...
        <Route path="/blog/*" element={<Blog serviceType={{ source: 'mock' } as ServiceType} footerName="Sample Blog" />} />
      </Routes>
    </BrowserRouter>

Example Setup

You can see a live example of this library in action at wavecoder.com.au/blog.

The source repository showing the proper folder structure for blog posts can be found here: github.com/ktalanda/wavecoder-blog

This example demonstrates:

  1. The correct folder naming structure with dates
  2. Markdown content files
  3. Manifest file with tags
  4. How to deploy the content to a CDN
