Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Troubleshooting

Gestures not working

Problem: Touch gestures don't respond

Solution:

  1. Add to top of index.js:
import 'react-native-gesture-handler';
  1. Update MainActivity (Android):
@Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
    super.onCreate(null);
}
  1. Clear cache and rebuild:
npx react-native start --reset-cache
npx react-native run-android

Zoom animation not working

Problem: Zoom doesn't animate smoothly

Solution:

Add to babel.config.js:

module.exports = {
  plugins: ['react-native-reanimated/plugin'], // Must be last!
};

Rebuild:

npx react-native run-ios

Icons not displaying

Problem: Custom icons show as empty boxes

Solution:

  1. Install vector icons:
npm install react-native-vector-icons
  1. iOS - Install pods:
cd ios && pod install && cd ..
  1. Android - Add to android/app/build.gradle:
apply from: "../../node_modules/react-native-vector-icons/fonts.gradle"
  1. Rebuild app

TypeScript errors

Problem: Type errors in custom render functions

Solution:

Use proper types:

import { RNFlowNode } from 'react-native-rnflow';

interface MyData {
  title: string;
  name: string;
}

const data: RNFlowNode<MyData> = {
  id: '1',
  data: { title: 'CEO', name: 'John' },
  children: [],
};

Performance issues with large trees

Problem: Slow rendering with 100+ nodes

Solution:

  1. Reduce node complexity:
layout={{ nodeWidth: 100, nodeHeight: 60 }}
  1. Memoize render functions:
const renderNode = useMemo(() =>
  (node, options) => <CustomNode {...options} />,
  []
);
  1. Limit visible depth:
const visibleData = filterToDepth(data, 3);

White screen on app start

Problem: App shows white screen

Solution:

  1. Check all imports are correct
  2. Verify babel config has reanimated plugin
  3. Clear metro cache:
npx react-native start --reset-cache
  1. Clean build:
# iOS
cd ios && rm -rf build && pod install && cd ..

# Android
cd android && ./gradlew clean && cd ..

Module not found errors

Problem: Cannot find 'react-native-reanimated' or other modules

Solution:

Reinstall dependencies:

rm -rf node_modules
npm install
cd ios && pod install && cd ..

Performance

Benchmarks

Our tests show excellent performance across different tree sizes:

| Tree Size | Render Time | FPS | Memory Usage | |-----------|-------------|-----|--------------| | 10 nodes | < 100ms | 60 | ~10MB | | 50 nodes | < 300ms | 60 | ~25MB | | 100 nodes | < 600ms | 55-60 | ~50MB | | 500 nodes | < 2s | 50-55 | ~150MB |

Optimization Tips

1. Memoize Custom Render Functions

const renderNode = useMemo(
  () => (node, options) => <CustomNode {...node} {...options} />,
  []
);

<RNFlow data={data} render={{ renderNode }} />

2. Keep Node Data Minimal

❌ Bad:

data: {
  title: 'CEO',
  fullBio: '...(large text)...',
  profileImage: '...(base64)...',
  // ... lots of data
}

✅ Good:

data: {
  title: 'CEO',
  id: '123', // Load details on demand
}

3. Use Appropriate Node Sizes

For large trees, use smaller nodes:

layout={{
  nodeWidth: 100,  // Instead of 200
  nodeHeight: 60,  // Instead of 120
}}

4. Limit Zoom Range

zoom={{
  minZoom: 0.5,  // Instead of 0.1
  maxZoom: 2,    // Instead of 5
}}

5. Disable Features You Don't Need

zoom={{
  enableZoomControls: false, // If not needed
}}
scroll={{
  hideScrollBars: true, // Slight performance gain
}}

6. Lazy Load Children

For very large trees:

const [loadedNodes, setLoadedNodes] = useState(initialNodes);

const loadChildren = async (nodeId) => {
  const children = await fetchChildren(nodeId);
  setLoadedNodes(prev => updateWithChildren(prev, nodeId, children));
};

7. Use Production Build

Development builds are slower. Test performance in production:

npx react-native run-ios --configuration Release
npx react-native run-android --variant=release
