Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

react-redist

A lightweight function to distribute the data from a component to another component

Installation

npm install react-redist --save

Example

import React, { Component } from 'react';
import { autoEmitState, emitState, listenState, offListenState } from 'react-redist';
import { ANOTHER_ACTION } from './AnotherComponent';

export const EXAMPLE_ACTION_1 = 'CUSTOM_ACTION_NAME_1'; // action name
export const EXAMPLE_ACTION_2 = 'CUSTOM_ACTION_NAME_2'; // you can create more than one action name if needed

class Example extends Component {
    constructor(props) {
        super(props);

        this.state = {};
    }

    render() {
        // your render function
    }

    componentDidMount() {
        // Emit state data automatically when the setState function is invoked
        autoEmitState(this, EXAMPLE_ACTION_1);

        // Listen on ANOTHER_ACTION
        this.listenId = listenState(ANOTHER_ACTION, (state) => {
            console.log(state);
            // your custom code
        });

        // Emit any custom data to any custom action
        emitState(EXAMPLE_ACTION_2, 'My Custom Data');
    }

    componentWillUnmount() {
        // Stop listening on ANOTHER_ACTION
        offListenState(ANOTHER_ACTION, this.listenId);
    }
}

export default Example;

Does it work with a function component? Ohh, Yes!

import React, { useEffect } from 'react';
import { emitState, listenState, offListenState } from 'react-redist';
import { ANOTHER_ACTION } from './AnotherComponent';

export const EXAMPLE_ACTION = 'CUSTOM_ACTION_NAME'; // action name

export default function MyCustomComponent(props) {
    const [state, setState] = useState({
        // any data
    });

    useEffect(() => {
        // listen on ANOTHER_ACTION
        const id = listenState(ANOTHER_ACTION, (data) => {
            // your custom code in callback function
        });

        return () =>{
            // stop listening on ANOTHER_ACTION
            offListenState(ANOTHER_ACTION, id);
        };
    });

    const handleClick = (event) => {
        const el = event.currentTarget;

        setState(el); // it's example, you can set any data to setState function

        emitState(EXAMPLE_ACTION, el); // emit any data with to custom action
    };

    return <button onClick={handleClick}>Custom Text</button>
}

Prevent conflict with another app

Please using the webpack.DefinePlugin plugin to rename the global register variable

new webpack.DefinePlugin({
    __redist_register__: '"__redist_my_custom_app__"',
})

Example code

const webpack = require('webpack');

module.exports = (env) => {
    return {
        entry: './index.js',
        plugins: [
            new webpack.DefinePlugin({
                __redist_register__: '"__redist_my_custom_app__"',
            }),
        ],
        output: {
            filename: 'my-app.js',
            path: __dirname + '/dist',
        },
    };
};
