Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

React Statecraft

CircleCI Codecov

Pure State Mutation & Event Driven Side Effects

You may like this library if:

  • You like state changes to be the result of pure functions
  • You dislike updating 37 files to make a simple state change
  • You want to update state from a promise resolution without extra steps/libraries
  • You want to handle side effects through events subscribed to state changes

Install

$ npm i -S react-statecraft

Usage

import React from 'react'
import StateContainer from 'react-statecraft'

// Setup
const state = { title: 'Initial Title' }
const GlobalContainer = new StateContainer(state, { debug: true })
const { action, effect, Provider, Consumer } = GlobalContainer

// Actions
const setTitleAction = title => ({ title })
const setTitle = action(setTitleAction, ['SAVE_STATE'])

// Effects
effect('SAVE_STATE', state => {
  localStorage.setItem('stored-state', state)
})

const handleClick = () => setTitle(prompt('Set new title'))

export const App = () => (
  <Provider>
    <Consumer>
      {({ title }) => (
        <>
          <h1>{title}</h1>
          <button onClick={handleClick}>Set Title</button>
        </>
      )}
    </Consumer>
  </Provider>
)

API

Class

StateContainer(initialState[, options])

  • initialState: object for initial state
  • options: (optional)
    {
      debug: Boolean
    }
  • Returns: a class instance for managing all child state.

Class Components

StateContainer.Consumer(getProps)

  • getProps: function that takes state and returns an object used as props in the render function
  • children: uses a render function to pass state to children

StateContainer.Provider

  • The Provider from React's context API

Class Methods

StateContainer.action(actionFn[, effects])

  • actionFn: a function that eventually returns new state. If null is returned, the state change will abort. Valid return values are:
    • object representing state changes
    • a Promise that resolves to an object representing state changes
    • a function that takes current state and returns one of the above
  • effects: (optional) an array of registered effect names that will run sequentially once the state change is complete
  • Returns: a function that acts like actionFn but effects state change. It returns the value that actionFn returns.

StateContainer.connect(component[, props])

  • component: a React component
  • props: a function that takes state and returns an object used as props for the wrapped component.
  • Returns: a component that receives state from the StateContainers context.

StateContainer.effect(name, effectFn)

  • name: string that references the registered effect
  • effectFn: function that takes (state, prevState) to use in side effects
  • Returns: undefined

StateContainer.getState()

  • Returns: current state object

Class Properties

StateContainer.context

  • The React context object

StateContainer.effects

StateContainer.mutations

  • List of mutations since app load

StateContainer.options

  • The options passed to the class constructor
