Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

react-use-axios

v2.2.2

Published

useAxios react hook

Readme

CircleCI Coverage Status Greenkeeper badge Npm Version Size License Twitter

Dependencies Dev Dependencies

useAxios

React hook for axios, written in typescript

Features

  • same api as useEffect
  • request cancelling on component unmount
  • typings!

Install

npm

npm install --save react-use-axios

yarn

yarn add react-use-axios

Note: react(>= v16.8.0) and axios(>= 0.19.0) are listed as peer dependencies.

Prior Works

Why creating another one? Because:

  • I want typings
  • I want to make its behaviour and api the same as useEffect, so we don't need to look up the api when using this hook

Usage

use this hook just like useEffect, the first argument is axios' config object, and the second argument is useEffect's dependencies array.

interface Props {
  foo: string
}

interface ResponseObject {
  bar: string
}

const Component: React.FunctionComponent<Props> = (props) => {
  const { foo } = props

  const [res] = useAxios<ResponseObject[]>(
    {
      url: '/api',
      method: 'get',
    },
    [foo]
  )

  if (res.type === 'loading') return 'loading'
  if (res.type === 'error') return 'error'
  if (res.data.length === 0) return 'empty'
  return objects
}

Skipping request

Often you want to skip the request on some condition, you can simply pass skipRequest to useAxios

useAxios({
  url: '/api',
  method: 'get',
  skipRequest: () => !foo
}, [foo])

Callbacks

useEffect to the rescure:

const [res] = useAxios({ url: '/api', method: 'get' }, [])
useEffect(() => {
  if (res.type === 'success') {
    console.info(res.data)
  }
  if (res.type === 'error') {
    console.error(res.data)
  }
}, [res])

Rerun

rerun will retrigger the request even if you have skipped request, useful for callback triggered requests

const [res, {rerun}] = useAxios({ url: '/api', method: 'get', skipRequest: () => true }, [])
const onClick = () => {
  rerun()
}
<button onClick={onClick} />

Cancelling request on component unmount

useAxios uses the axios cancel token to cancel requests, so requests are automatically canceled when a component unmounts.

Note on source code

What's with the areHookInputsEqual?

This dependencies comparison is copied from the React codebase. It's needed because without it, when your dependencies change, you will get an extra render with the previous data. So to avoid this, we need to reset the state in the same event look / scheduler.
