Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

recursive-find-mcp

Ctrl+F for whole websites, for agents. Search a page and every page it links to, and get back only the pages that match, with short snippets. One call answers "which pages on this site / in these docs mention X?" without the agent fetching and reading every page itself.

Ships three ways: an MCP server (one tool, recursive_find), a CLI (rfind), and an Agent Skill (SKILL.md). Headless version of the Recursive Find Chrome extension. Node 18+.

$ rfind https://docs.python.org/3/library/ "free-threaded" --within /3/library/ --main --depth 2 --max-pages 1000 --snippets 1
18 hits on 9 pages · 323 pages scanned, depth 2, 1s

Measured: on three "which pages mention X?" questions about live docs sites, Claude agents using it finished about 2× faster (92 s vs 171 s) and used about a third fewer tokens (−37% input, −58% output), with the same accuracy. The gain was largest on the biggest site (2.7×). It's a small sample; see the full benchmark.

MCP server

Claude Code

claude mcp add recursive-find -- npx -y recursive-find-mcp

Claude Desktop (claude_desktop_config.json) and Cursor (~/.cursor/mcp.json or .cursor/mcp.json):

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "recursive-find": { "command": "npx", "args": ["-y", "recursive-find-mcp"] }
  }
}

The tool takes url and query, plus optional depth (default 1, max 3), within (path prefix, e.g. /docs/), max_pages (default 100, max 1000), max_seconds (default 120), mode (text | word | regex), case_sensitive, main_only (ignore nav, sidebars and footers), any_site, first, limit and snippets. It returns the compact text report above, plus the same data as JSON in structuredContent.

CLI

npx -y -p recursive-find-mcp rfind https://docs.python.org/3/library/ "free-threaded" --within /3/library/ --depth 2

Or npm install -g recursive-find-mcp and run rfind. rfind --help lists the flags. Exit codes: 0 = crawl ran (even with 0 hits), 1 = start page failed, 2 = bad arguments. --json for JSON output.

Agent skill

Copy this package's folder (SKILL.md + scripts/) into your agent's skills folder as recursive-find/, and symlink scripts/rfind.mjs onto your PATH as rfind. The CLI itself has no dependencies.

Behavior

Same site only by default, breadth-first, 4 parallel fetches, 10 s per page, a 120 s limit for the whole crawl, honors robots.txt, skips non-HTML links. Server HTML only: no JavaScript rendering, no cookies or logins. Pages over 32 MB are searched partially and flagged in the summary, as are crawls that hit max_pages or max_seconds.

Security note: the tool fetches whatever URL it's given, including localhost and private network addresses, as the user running it. That's fine for a local server you run yourself. Don't expose it as a shared or hosted service without blocking private addresses first.
